A majority of Americans say the U.S. government is corrupt and almost a third say it may soon be necessary to take up arms against it, according to a new poll from the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics.

 

Two-thirds of Republicans and independents say the government is “corrupt and rigged against everyday people like me,” according to the poll, compared to 51 percent of liberal voters.

 

Twenty-eight percent of all voters, including 37 percent of gun owners, agreed “it may be necessary at some point soon for citizens to take up arms against the government,” a view held by around 35 percent of Republicans and around 35 percent of Independents. One in five Democrats concurred.

But you do know the government has a large army, drones, tanks, warplanes, tactical nuclear weapons... Plus 2 in 3 of the civilian population who do not want to take up arms. I don't see it going well from an outsiders' perspective....

No, it's unconstitutional.

 

Realistic it would never occur anyway. Red states can't afford to seceed.

 

So in aggregate, the federal government transfers wealth from the blue states to the red states.

Blue staters, on the other hand, ease the consumption gap by saving more and purchasing durable goods. Of course, poorer households often cannot save and thus must rely on fiscal transfers, so this red state-blue state gap might just be the result of wealth disparities between the two cohorts.

It's the most common stated reason for second amendment crazies to want to own assault type rifles. The results are not surprising.

The Civil War was, in part, fought over the right of states to secede from the Union.  The states that wanted to secede lost.  So, no they cannot secede from the Union.  

As much as I don't exactly trust the federal government, I have a much bigger beef with those closer to home.  First on my list is the HOA, followed by the County and then the State.

Outside of Texas, which at one time an independent country after it won independence from Mexico, I don't think any other state has ever really considered it.  I don't think the idea of leaving the Union is really much a part of the American psyche.

This kind of rhetoric is what sparked the civil war back in the mid 1800’s. Those advocating “taking up arms against the government” should be rounded up and tried for treason. The level of insanity that it takes to contemplate such horror is palpable.

I think you'd be surprised at how many people are deadly serious. The answer will certainly be many less than will claim they would be willing to do so but there's still plenty of true believers. I think it can mainly be sheeted back to the southern baptist church and evangelical organisations.

Most of those same people probably couldn't make it out of the Applebee's parking lot without their mobility scooters.

Most of us are quite happy with the status quo. I was brought up in the southern United States, but it was always obvious to me that the Confederate cause was entirely based on the slavery issue. When your whole reason for being is the “right” to OWN other human beings, you have lost the plot.

But again: given what Scott and others have told me. The US is one, like it or not. Any serious insurrection could be quashed within a few hours at worst if your Federal government decided upon it. So even an armed militia in... Well I don't know... Philidelphia, for example, would be utterly crushed...

I can't see it happening, at least not as an armed rebellion.  Its ideological differences and they can result in violence, but how do you know who exactly to attack?  It's not like you can look at someone and see if they are pro-life/anti-abortion.  You can't if someone is for renewable energy and against fossil fuels?  I find myself arguing with someone on a social media site, but I am a very long ways. from getting a gun and driving around the town I think he lives in and trying to shoot BigMax69 for his stand on the election!!

While there’s not much commonality between those two ideologies, in terms of the amount of evil generated, they are roughly on par. I have no sympathy with either Islamist or Confederate thinking.

It could happen as the Democratic left has gone full blown in Socialist ideology’s ; they have open the Southern border with little intervention into the 100,000 illegal foreigners coming EACH MONTH. Who was interviewed for this poll?  The Trump conspiracy theorist?  And the people that can’t make it on their own so they blame the country for everything?  Taking up arms against America?  They are just plain traitors.  

If you don’t like America then leave it.  Maybe move to Thailand.  This way instead of only complaining about America.  You can complain about Thailand also.  Which seems to be the case for many.
