Everybody has a high-ol' time when they do this.

The CNS was at the ganja burning party--unfortunately it produced an unusual amount of paranoia. Oh, and the munchies.

The Advisor to the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) reports that authorities have prevent at least 50 percent of total narcotics shipments from reaching the nation's interior.

Office of the Narcotics Control Board Advisor Chatchai Suthikrom (ชาติชาย สุทธิกรม) reports that narcotic suppression efforts from 2006 to the present period are still concentrated along major border crossing areas and the southern border provinces. The number of arrests remain constant, though authorities are pleased to report success in intercepting 50-52 percent of total estimated annual drug shipments.

Most drug shipments are reported to be of small quantities in order to avoid discovery. Mr. Chatchai revealed that the Office of the Narcotics Control Board will be coordinating with the Food and Drug Administration in incinerating more than 1000 kilograms and 5.99 liters of narcotics at the Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate.

Tonnes of drugs incinerated after Thai crackdown

Thailand has burnt almost three tonnes of drugs worth about $125 million to mark the United Nations day against drug abuse and trafficking.

Deputy Health Minister Morakot Kornkasem says the haul of methamphetamines, heroin, opium, ecstasy, cocaine and marijuana was set ablaze in an environmentally-friendly incinerator in the central province of Ayutthaya.

"Thailand is seriously cracking down on drugs in order to overcome the drug problem and reduce drug addiction and its consequences," Mr Morakot said at the ceremony attended by foreign diplomats.

He says Thailand will focus on preventing chemicals used to make drugs from being smuggled into the kingdom and on rehabilitating addicts.

Authorities say the destroyed drugs came from 12,672 resolved court cases and most of them were methamphetamines, known locally as "yaba".

Thailand once had the one of the world's highest rates of methamphetamine use, sparking a controversial "war on drugs" in 2003 that saw more than 2,200 suspected drug offenders die in apparent extrajudicial killings.

The UN 2007 World Drug Report, published on Monday, found that "there is no doubt that the methamphetamine situation in Thailand is far better today than it was at the peak of the methamphetamine epidemic in 2001".

The report said about 0.75 per cent of the population were using the drug in 2006, down from 2.4 per cent in 2001.

But it added that seizures of crystal methamphetamine were rising and reports suggested there was an increase of trafficking into Thailand from neighbouring Laos and Cambodia.

The report said Most of the methamphetamine on Thai markets originated in Burma.

It noted that in the Golden Triangle, where Burma, Thailand and Laos meet, cultivation of opium poppies, which can be used to produce heroin, morphine and opium, had fallen by almost 80 per cent since 1998.
