Basketball - A Russian court has sentenced US basketball star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison on drug charges. The 31 year old  double Olympic winner has admitted possessing cannabis oil, but told the court she had made an "honest mistake".The court near Moscow convicted her of smuggling and possessing narcotics. Her defence team said they would appeal against the verdict.

Athletics - World Triathlon has approved a new policy that will allow transgender athletes to continue competing in female categories.

However, they must demonstrate lower concentrations of testosterone continuously for at least two years and cannot have competed as a male in any sporting competition in the past four years. 

The new regulations, which come into effect next month do not mention transgender athletes in male events.

Football - Chelsea have signed 18-year-old midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa for £20m.

He starred in England's Under-19 European Championship triumph in July,

He has agreed a six-year deal. He was left out of Villa's pre-season tour to Australia after refusing to sign a new contract and Renato Sanches has signed a five-year contract with French champions Paris St-Germain until June 2027.  

The 24-year-old Portugal midfielder joins the Parisians from Lille, where he won the Ligue 1 title in 2020-21.
