What is this wire?

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell what this wire is for? Its just hanging there in a room not being used. The wire goes into a wall with other electical lines and I cant follow it to the origin.

used for whatever you connect it to.

It was already like this when I moved in. I never connect it to anything.

Put a meter on it and turn on all your breakers and switches. If it's hot then it's probably a "Switch leg" for a light or fan and should be capped off.

If it it's hot, it may still be a "switch leg" but not connected in the wall box.

Are the "cores" solid?

It's difficult to tell without scale but it could be a phone line.

Cores are solid and quite thin, like 1mm thin.

Probably an old phone line.

Does it tingle when you lick both wires at the same time? ????

Somehow it is funny that some of us have to remember the time of those stationary phones. Like everybody had one at home. I even had two at home. Amazing!

I kind of dont want to lick it, but seems like unimportant wires that I wont be able to use it?

When you dont have a meter , use a lightbulb . Do you have any switch where you do not know what it is for ?

No unknown switch in the room. The wire is hanging right next to the breaker that goes to the AC unit, not sure if it means anything.

Maybe , older temp control , non remote type . You find them still around here and there .
