Thai Language Website Test

Featured Replies

I lived in thailand for three years before moving to brazil (this is the second time I'm posting this - the first one dissapeared). I created a website to study portuguese and just 2 days ago was finally able to find a good list of phonetically translated thai words to put into my website. I am really excited about it. But I would love to get some feedback about the quality of the words. And, if anyone has a list of phonetically translated words from Thai to english that would be great if I could add them to my dictionary!

Try it out and tell me what you think

www.travelersdictionary.net

most of the thai words come up in another language!!!

would be better to have thai writing rather than phonetic English :o

Good idea though

I had a quick look at the website. Some very basic, but useful words to beginners popped up to start with.... Last week, Elephant, Western Food.... and then Intestine! It doesn't seem to fit, maybe some categorization is required?

Actually, what you're looking just by clicking the flashcard page is the entire Dictionary. You can create your own lists as you go. Setting up your own lists to play with is easy. Or, simply rate the difficulty of Words as you play, and then practice based on levels: easy, medium, or hard. You can also Rate the quality of each word, from 1 to 5. If you find a word that isn't appropriate or just wrong, give it a low rating. You can even edit the words in the dictionary if you find errors, or if you want to add the basic word category or wordtype. You can even add examples to illustrate how the word is used.

My suggestion is that if you want to only practice certain words, create a list to play with. Most important is to use the section "create a new flashcard set" to create what type of flashcards you want to view. Unfortunately, because Thai is a newly added language, most of the options and functions are limited. The are no "examples" and words have not been associated with categories and wordtypes yet. I'm hoping that users that are interested will take the time to edit some of the words properties. Portuguese, the original language of the website, is much more developed with pictures, examples, and even several hundred recorded sounds of each word.

Try going to www.travelersdictionary.net/language/flashcardset2.asp This is the dropdown "games > flashcard sets". It will help to illustrate your options better.

As for using Thai script as opposed to phonetic Thai, that probably won't happen. One, my server doesn't seem to like it (I've tried hard to make it work but without success). But mostly the site is a place to practice vocabulary for begginers and using Thai isn't for beginners in my oppinion. Also, it would require alot more instructions to help people understand how to use the language and I don't have the time for that. If you're interested in word games for thai language, I suggest creating your own list on Quizlet.com. It's a great site for practicing lists. The main difference between quizlet and mine is that on mine the words are already given and you can make sublists from the dictionary while on quizlet you are required to use your own words or find someone else's list that you like.

Ok, sorry I probably didn't explore the site enough.

As Murf said, the site would be a lot more useful to more advanced users if Thai script was used in addition to the transliteration.

Are you using a SQL database? I've had a bit of experience getting Thai script to work properly recently with MS SQL 2005.

Anyway, good luck with the site.

Seemed like words in all languages would come up not just Thai. Just my 2 cents.

also, some way to adjust speed on auto flipping, it's a bit fast.
