Thai Rath reported with a video on a fire that occurred at Summit Windmill golf course in Bang Phli Yai, Samut Prakan, in the early hours of Monday morning. 

 

The fire in a four story building where golf carts are kept overnight for charging was the second in just over a month at the course.

 

This time 70 carts parked on the third floor were destroyed. Damage was estimated at 21 million baht.

Fire fighters using ten engines took an hour to bring the blaze under control after it started around 1 am. The sound of exploding batteries could be heard.

 

No one was in the building and a short circuit is suspected. 

 

A fire in the same place on the fourth floor on August 3rd also damaged 70 carts being charged.

Cheap Chinese cladding paid a part too?

could it be one of the electric golf carts whilst being on charge overnight was the cause and not a short circuit as mentioned.

Battery failure due to overcharging and instant fire .......with water that smoke becomes toxic.

Lucky they had insurance...

Blame the battery factory for malfunctioning batteries.... Almost same as they do for Mountain B

They changed to Li-ion batteries but are still using lead acid chargers? ???? Or vice versa.

Batteries are supposed to be protected by the BMS (Battery Management System) which should have disconnected the charger in the event of either high temperature or over voltage/charge.

It seems that was either missing or failed.

A similar event happened a couple of years ago at the Jerez MotoE race track. In that case it wasn't any cheapo batteries or chargers but 18 hugely expensive electric racing bikes. Then a few months later, another bike caught fire after the battery exploded when being charged at the Austrian race and again the following year yet another one caught fire at the Barcelona track while being charged.

 

If it can happen to top quality, well maintained racing motorbikes then it should be no surprise when a few cheap golf carts do the same thing.

Fires involving li-ion batteries are really dangerous as they burn so intensely

PO went in friday for 70 new carts

I think there will be a lot more of these problems as the Chinese will be swamping the marketplace with cheap electric vehicles soon. They are already being stockpiled.

I wonder if they have a "new for old " insurance policy?
