Locals in Sukhumvit Soi 39 in downtown Bangkok were so furious after an accident at 7.30 am yesterday that they tried to attack a trucker who had just killed a man and a five year old girl on a motorcycle. 

 

They believed that Pongkorn Krataithong, who was carrying about 50 workers in the back of his adapted six wheel truck, smelled of alcohol.

 

Thong Lo police chief Pol Col Duangchot Suwanjarat said his men quickly had the situation under control and hurried the suspect away, reported Thai Rath.

He was not over the alcohol limit but the police were waiting on drug reports. 

 

Dead at the Phrom Sri 1 lights were Wandee and little Phakthathima. 

 

A Yamaha Fino was under the wheels of the truck.

 

Two people on a Honda bike who had also been waiting at the lights were taken with injuries to Camillian Hospital.

 

Police think it may have been brake failure and are having an expert check the brakes on the truck.

Blind Freddy could tell in 2 minutes if it was break failure!

They can safely devote a whole section reporting on the day's deads as the results of vehicle's collusion that's how many are dying every day in this country...

Brake failure... again... 

 

Make the driver and the owner of the vehicle both fully responsible for allowing an unroadworthy vehicle on the road. 

 

That this ‘unroadworthy vehicle’ caused death means the penalty for the driver and owner should be far greater.

Takes all of 1 minute, to fire up the vehicle, and then step on the brake pedal while someone looks to see if the brakes engage.  He of course will say that the collision must have miraculously repaired the brakes.....

Maybe the dash cam in the truck (seen in the photo) might be of use? ????

If its the same one? the scooter stopped at an amber light the truck tried to beat it a grandparent and child  on their way to school wiped out instantly a scene played out hourly here ????Rip

Sadly, the situation was out of control for some time. 

 

Would have been a scary situation for the cops. 

 

The mob was out of the control.

That would be a reasonable and scientific solution. Maybe a bit too sophisticated for the investigators? Either that or the trucking company asked the police very convincingly not to review the footage.

Perhaps they did do that resulting in the police statement and the brakes didn't repair themselves!

First off.  May the deceased RIP.  
Brake failure and wet roads seem to be popular reasons for accidents here in the LOS. 
There were about 50 people in a modified truck?  Gee I’m sure that wouldn’t have anything to do with it
 

Many of my Tai friends posted the video of this 'riot'. Should have left the mob alone and walked away

That dash-cam footage (if the cam was on - it appears there is a cable going to it) could potentially exonerate the Owners of the vehicle or condemn them. 

- No evidence of brake failure in dash-cam footage - owners exonerated. 

- Evidence of brake failure in dash-cam footage - incident now wholly the drivers fault (but did he have an option to crash into something else where people weren’t ?).

This is why people frequently don't stop at the scene after an accident.

 

They don't want to be beaten to death by an unruly mob.

Yes, I understand but it's a shame that more care is not taken when driving, this way they would never have to worry about the mob. 

 

 

 

50 people approx. 2,500 kilos extra on your truck.

Them brakes are going to take time in slowing you down , ( depending on the speed you are doing )

Sadly, many areas of Thai society operate on the "one slight error in any way and someone dies, fly by the seat of your pants, if it aint broke (and we won't know if we don't check) don't fix it" principle.

Fifty is really pushing it. That's about the same capacity as a 'coach' as we call them in the UK..

as i remember there was an attempt at, very sensibly, banning carrying people in the back of pick ups and trucks. but the people didn't like it, so the government backed down. populism before people's lives

Stop the ridiculous brake failure rubbish...  he hit them at the lights, so he just failed to stop in time.

BRAKE FAILURE  -  Failure to apply the brakes.

The irony is every one of them attacking the driver will go through red lights and fail to stop at crossings.
