Newin Chidchob: The kingmaker of Thai politics returns as election looms

Although officially out of politics, Newin Chidchob appears to be playing the role of kingmaker for prime ministerial candidate Anutin Charnvirakul from the coalition Bhumjaithai Party.

 

Newin took the same role in December 2008 after defecting from the camp loyal to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to help the rival Democrat Party form a new coalition government led by Abhisit Vejjajiva.

 

Newin was not rewarded with a seat in Abhisit’s Cabinet, but his political allies were handed coveted ministerial portfolios, including Transport and Interior.

His brother, Saksayam, is Minister of Transport, one of the more lucrative ministries.

 

Given the fractious nature of Thai political parties now, and how some are "legally" neutered, he does seem to be in a position to sway another coalition, and reap even more rewards.

 

Sometimes it's like watching The Godfather films (I and II that is).

May be "kingmaker" isn't the best word to use in Thailand? Can be interpreted as lese majeste violation or at least hurt someone's feeling. ????

A thug from a thug family, no stranger to vote-buying and corruption, and no doubt still an influence in Buriram, the only province in Thailand, I believe, to mandate Covid vaccinations for its denizens.

 

He is the poster child for the sort of soulless warlord who has to be removed from Thai politics if any progress is going to be made.
