Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra came out to suggest that the government of 2014 coup leader and incumbent Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, should tackle unregistered guns floating around in Thailand by giving a 3-month grace period to register or else face stiff fines, a move that would help make the country safer.

 

“There are various ways to sort out this issue but the simplest is to grant an amnesty to those who have illegal possession of weapons to register say within 3-months and then go hard on cracking down and imposing fines with rewards to the police for seizing illegal weapons in the possession of the people,” the self-exiled Thaksin who was speaking at his bi-weekly Clubhouse talk show said late last night.

 

Thaksin’s statement came as the bodies of 37 people who were killed in October 7th massacre by the renegade former police officer went on a killing spree that killed 24 toddlers who were as young as 2 years of age and another 13 people adults who were all massacred due to the mental illness caused by possible drug abuse.

This is the same man who promised to make Thailand gun free within five years..........then did absolutely nothing.  He has absolutely no shame.

Despicable waste of oxygen, and this site gleefully publishes any self serving rubbish he decides to spout.

Why does nobody ever challenge him on this <deleted>?  I would love to see him squirm.

Amnesty- Good suggestion irrespective of who made it.

 

 

That would actually lead to a huge surge in illegal gun purchases.
The prices of "legally purchased" pistols and revolvers are about 5 times the price in the US, and rifles and shotguns are about 3 times as much.

A handgun or rifle purchased on the black market is more like parity with US prices or cheaper.  So the government calls for a 3 month amnesty, everyone who can not afford a gun gets a black market gun, and then registers it.   ????

Let me take a SWAG at why Thaksin is recommending this.  It floods Thailand with weapons and then with a push from certain Western deep state actors, Thailand has a violent "Color Revolution" and Thaksin come riding to the rescue?  Just saying.  My guess is that the cop who went on a murder spree probably had a registered handgun.

It's not a good idea.  It puts guns in the hands of people who would not otherwise be able to afford them or who would rather not get busted with illegal, unregistered firearms.  Keeping the laws as they stand creates a deterrent to arming people who know little about the proper use and safety of guns in general.

A lot of those "toddlers" where killed with a knife.  The guy went in to the rooms where they were sleeping and slit their throats.  Brutal.  Should knifes be made illegal?

So just let someone who obtained a gun through illegal means register it and everything is fine?  No consequences for going out and buying a gun illegally?

 

Doesn't he know why people buy illegal guns?  Probably because they don't meet the criteria to own one legally and they want to use the gun in committing a crime.

Sadly, he has always had a family member to act as proxy since he left.  This means people simply need to elect the proxy (in return for cash) and he is back in control.

I thought a "gun amnesty" was to give people time to surrender illegal guns, not to register them.  The proposed amnesty is crazy!

I don’t miss Thaksin, but I really miss Yingluck who just looks much hotter than Prayut and her dad.

Well, as an example when the Gen currently occupying the PM spot overturned democracy and stole power he said he would rid Thailand of corruption       () and reform the police () so these kinds of grandiose statements are quite normal here.

 

Now how about you commenting on what Mr. Thaksin actually suggested instead of reverting to the boring Thaksin hysteria?

He was legally elected prime minister two times in Thailand for then be overthrown in a coup by military. His sister the same, legaly elected and overtrown by military.

He is relevant because he was a wildly popular elected PM who got "couped" by the old elite. Not sure why you even need to ask the question.

Not really in a way that was genuinely legal.  It would be better to use inverted commas and say that he was "legally elected", to indicate that the phrase has a slightly different meaning in Thailand.

Quite.  It's like suddenly having a "money laundering amnesty" where people can take their illegally earnt and untaxed money to the bank, put it in their account, then have it declared completely legitimate.

 

I think Thaksin just says whatever he thinks people want to hear.

History has already proven that nobody honest and not corrupt, will ever gain power here. That is just not Thai-style at all.

 

Just imagine the confusion if they got rid of corruption. So many rich criminals would “lose face”. Can’t have that!

 

People would be honest, police would be doing their jobs and accountants would have to submit the actual figures. Would be a nightmare for us all.

Would love if Thanatorn, or someone like him, was given the chance to govern Thailand but as we all know that won't happen for the foreseeable future due to the way Thai society is built. It would really take a proper revolution to change this and although I hope it will one day happen I'm not holding my breath.

But in the mean time I'll take an elected Thaksin over any unelected coup leader/old elite protector any day of the week.

Are there really no alternative opposition candidates out there? Why is this relic even being given a platform? Why do his tweets matter? How long has he been gone? Is anyone listening? Is this a sign of how desperate the people are, or is this symbolic of how weak the opposition is?

As far as I remember, Yingluck was not overthrown by the military, it was another PM.

To me it was a well planned coup by using the court. It is up to each and one of us to decide what we want to believe is the truth or not, but the fact is, Thailand is run by the Army and if there is going to be another elected prime minister, he or she have to run by the rules set by the generals, if not, they know the consequences.
