OPINION

Just because an idea came from a person you hate does not mean that it would always be a bad idea.

For example, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s suggestion to use radios to broadcast public information and communicate during natural disasters was a good suggestion radio travels farther than an LTE (Long-Term Evolution) broadcast which is a standard for wireless data transmission for mobile phones.

But because the suggestion came from Prayut, many people attacked him for it.

Another example was Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s suggestion for a gun amnesty to reduce the number of illegal firearms.

Another good article by the Thai enquirer.

Thank you.

Lots of common sense there which is more than can be said for the vote catching, photo opportunities by the PM in other articles.

I hate to say this but LTE is radio transmission but without a lot of the facilities. Saying Radio goes further than LTE is incorrect.

How about a nationwide gun amnesty...  no questions asked, just drop them off at the station

If after the amnesty you are in possession of an illegally held gun it's a mandatory 5 years in the pokey, no caveats for who you think you are.

Maybe, but what will happen to the guns handed in?

Will they be instantly disabled (e.g. barrel twisted/bent so that it cannot be used, and trigger menchism squashed in a heavy press so unuseable/unrepairable, all while the person handing it in is watching?

As they were in the handgun ban in the UK.. Guns were totally destroyed..

Guillotined into pieces.

Not as watched by the owner as police in England could be trusted.

Good info.

In some countries police not so trusted (often for good reason), therefore the regulations involved required that the person handing the gun in watched while it was rendered unuseable / un repairable.

It's a good idea, but how many of the guns handed in would go 'missing' and then just sold back to the criminals .....

An off topic post about flood mismanagement and a reply has been removed.

Same as in Australia

Radio as in AM or FM Radio uses lower frequences than LTE and can travel longer distances. The max cell size for LTE is something like 100km while AM Radio can go for more than 1000km.

Didn't Thaksin suggest allowing people to register illegal guns while the actual amnesty will be handing in illegally held guns?

I don't think you can claim it is the same idea simply because it has the same name.

Thaksin thinks, Prayuth does.

Even after all these years, Thaksin is still their daddy.

Why has he picked the gun the wrong way around its the pointy end towards you general ????

True but it is still a radio transmission. Radio as being in the RF frequency band. Doubtful if you would use LTE for 100km direct or if in a real situation it would ever used. Normally VHF band is used for uninterrupted straight LOS transmissions (Assuming Microwave transmission is not used) LTE is generally in the 400MHz band.

It's all radio communication yes but they clearly refer to Radio Broadcast. I said LTE has an upper bound of something like 100km. Normally it's way way less. Single to lower double digit kilometers. With AM you can easily cover hundreds of km and even get around line of sight with refraction. And these low end radios can be powered with a batteries that are easily available or even powered with a hand crank. They have clear advantages in emergency situations whith severe blackouts. Of course it doesn't have to be one or the other. They can also send out SMS to everyone.

Should change the constitution to outlaw military coups too!

Hand guns are nothing compared to rolling tanks on to the streets of Bangkok.
