BANGKOK (NNT) - More than a million Malaysian tourists have made holidays in Thailand so far this year. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) now hopes to bank on the tourism high season and raise this figure to 1.8 million by year’s end.

TAT deputy governor Tanes Petsuwan indicated Malaysia is a high-potential market due to tourists being able to enter Thailand by land as well as by air. He said most Malaysian tourists drive into Thailand through various border points.

Unlike in the past, Malaysian tourists no longer remain solely in Hat Yai City during their holiday in Thailand. Instead, they now visit other provinces such as Krabi, Phatthalung, Phuket, Satun, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. 1,041,293 Malaysian tourists visited Thailand from January 1 to October 7 this year.

These visitors are expected to have contributed about 26.575 billion baht of tourism income to Thailand.

Mr. Tanes, who is in charge of International Marketing in Asia and South Pacific, said the number of Malaysian tourists will increase as Thailand has entered the high season.

Additionally, the tourism high season coincides with the school break in Malaysia, as well as the Diwali, Christmas, and New Year’s festivals. Mr. Tanes said the TAT will continually hold tourism promotion activities with an aim of attracting 1.8 million Malaysian tourists to Thailand this year.

The TAT deputy governor said cooperation between his agency and partners in Malaysia has contributed to the revival of the tourism industry. This is illustrated by the resumption of international flights between Malaysia and Thailand, of which there are now 23 per day.

A bazillion baht gained. Many came for the beaches and the temples before buying boxes of mama and heading home.....what a joke.  How many from Cambodia visited, or Mysnmar or even Laos. Do Malaysians have more money? That's the question.

No need to go that far. Plenty in Sadao and the town right on the border (the name escapes me). But the quality seems to deteriorate as you go south.

Unlike the 2 week millionaires who spend most of their time sitting on barstools nursing 50 baht beers, male Malaysian FITs tend to book out expensive karaoke rooms drinking XO or Royal Salute, sitting with coyote girls that charge 1,000 baht per hour just for company. These girls are not interested in ST unless you are willing to pay 10k per shot.

That’s why you won’t see many farangs in these history environments but lots of Asians.

How many were sex tourists? ????

This picture is most likely that of an incentive group. They typically number from 200 to 500, stay for about 3-5 days. They generally stay in 4 star hotels that charges around 2,000 - 3,000 baht per night (group discount. Rack rates are usually double that).

During their stay, they benefit a lot of ground service providers such as guides, coach companies, Thai restaurants and of course the main shopping malls as well as lots of other vendors.

If it’s a male FIT, then almost certainly a sex tourist as well. If family, then mostly food consumption and shopping.

999, 999 were men spending their $$$ in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat massage parlors.

LOL. Apparently Malaysian men used to come to Hat Yai to party.

I wonder if 1 million refers to 1 million different people, or less that visit multiple times.

Is that sarcasm, or you really have never been to Malaysia?

And to answer another poster earlier, yes Malaysians have more money than Thais (aboput 50% more per capita income) and way more than Laos or Myanmar.

I have not really spent time in Malaysia other than Penang, and transit trips to Bali... but it was a tongue in cheek comment. You quoted me and answered another poster.....???

TAT, give it a permanent rest.  Your bs has become predictable and intolerable.  No one, including Thais in tourism believes you anymore.

Cheap toiletries judging by the loads of shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste I see them filling shopping trollies with at Big C here in Hat Yai.

Wrong. Plenty of Thai women in Malaysia

Carloads of lads that never go any further than Sadao.

I've seen attempts to open Thai-style beer bars in Penang, they don't seem to last long.

Big-C Extra I almost had to fight my way to get to shampoo today; Head & Shoulders 410ml twin pack for Bht199 had Malaysians swarming.

Holiday = lost weekend in Hat Yai pubs drinking alcohol and banging hookers.
