Hello all US persons - nationals and legal residents (current and expired) - my legal residency in the USA (green card) is about to expire.  I am beyond my permission to stay out of the country and will be in Thailand for some time.  Is any formal process needed or does it simply expire?  Have any of you visited the USA after your green card expired and was there any difficulty obtaining a visa or waiver?  Were immigration outraged, compassionate, or indifferent to your change of status?

I did similar many years ago, I was deemed to have abandoned my Green Card but didn't have any problems going back as a tourist. BUT that was 1985, I read recently that people in that situation continue to have some obligations but I can't recall exactly what, possibly tax reporting. I'll do some digging and try to find oyt what out was.
