Prek Tnaot River declared hazardous to people’s health

The Ministry of Environment has issued an advisory telling people not to bathe in TakhmaoCity’s Prek Tnaot River. The ministry’s Inspection Department director Sarun Sambo said November 8 that the riverwater is contaminated. “Residents along the river in Kandal province must not bathe in the river or use the water for anything else like washing clothes,” he said.

According to Sambo, the contamination resulted from dirty water flowing into that part of the river from Boeung Choeung Ek, Boeung Tumpun, and other locations in Phnom Penh, particularly during the rainy season. “Prek Tnaot is still a source of wastewater as long as a wastewater treatment plant is not built,” he said.

“I am unable to predict when the condition of the Prek Tnaot River will improve and people should not use the water for now,“ he added. Kandal Department of Environment director Pov Somanak said recently that dirty water flowing freely into Prek Tnaot River continues to be an issue for public health and aquatic biodiversity. He said the river has been polluted by many people and that authorities are working to remedy the situation.
