Football -  Gareth Bale rode to Wales' rescue once again as the captain's 82nd minute penalty salvaged a draw against the United States in his country's first World Cup game for 64 years. Tim Weah had given the Americans the lead in the first half, 1-1 was the score. Earlier in Group B England put on a fine display to defeat Iran 6-2. Two late goals from Gakpo and Klassen gave the Netherlands a crucial 2-0 victory in their World Cup opener against Senegal in Group A.

Glasgow Rangers have sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst after a year in charge, with the Ibrox club nine points adrift of Glasgow Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race. The Dutchman took over in November last year, guiding his team to the Europa League final and lifting last season's Scottish Cup.

Cricket - David Warner will be able to attempt to have his lifetime leadership ban lifted after changes to Cricket Australia's code of conduct were approved.

Warner was banned from elite cricket for 12 months and from leadership positions for life by CA in 2018 for his part in the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. But the 36-year-old can now apply to have his sanction "modified" by a three-person review panel, as long as "exceptional circumstances" exist to justify a change to his ban.

Great performance by England. A very entertaining game (after the long delay for the goalkeeper's injury). Great goals. If they drop Maguire before they face any decent opposition with pace up front then they could do well in the tournament.
