Large King Cobra causing trouble for locals - gets away after momentary capture

Siam Rath reported that the social action group Ban Dung Update in Udon Thani, NE Thailand, was contacted for help after a large King Cobra reared its hood up facing a dog called Moo Ping.

 

Several other dogs got involved as neighbors wondered about the snake being a "Ngoo Jao Thee" or 'lord of the area'.

Such snakes are afforded a special status in Thai culture and usually allowed to stay where they are.

 

But as fears grew the snake was momentarily captured but managed to get away.

A wasteground area was cleared with a backhoe and a fire was set to try and flush out the snake as locals feared more trouble.

 

Subsequently the only snake found was one of another species.

A large King Cobra (more than 3 meters is average size) will face a man eye to eye .  Been there - and retreated.

Unless it comes into your home it's usually doing a good job outside.

Best left alone.

By coincidence we caught and killed a cobra in our garden yesterday.

We were alerted by the dogs barking at a bush.

It's the second one that has gotten in our place.

I like and admire those animals but unfortunately we cannot live together.

In Nepal cobras were hunted almost to extinction because their skins were so valuable. The loss of grain to rats skyrocketed. Used to see lots of cobras when the cane fields were burnt in Essarn. Always check the outhouse before entering.

In India they say that every house has its Cobra,they say if you kill one you should burn the body as otherwise the mate will come looking for you?
