Daily News reported on a shooting incident at a housing estate in Ubon Ratchathani in the NE of Thailand in which a policeman who was shot by an out of control man responded with two shots of his own hitting the assailant in the head and putting him in a coma.

Provincial chief Pol Maj-Gen Prasong Reuangdech told the media that Khok Chan police responded with six officers after Thiam Phansuk, 42 attacked his mother.

Thiam was in a downstairs bedroom in a house in the Emcharoen estate.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Phichit Khunmeuang knew the man and tried to reason with him from behind a bamboo door.

Instead of giving himself up Thiam fired three shots one of which hit Phichit in the right ribs.

Phichit shot back twice hitting Thiam in the cheek with the bullet exiting the back of the head.

He fell in a pool of blood and is now critical in a coma in hospital.

Both were taken to Trakan Phuet Phon hospital where the policeman is out of danger and recovering.

Thiam was transferred elsewhere due to the serious nature of his injury.
