Football - Lionel Messi says he will not retire from international football after captaining Argentina to a first World Cup trophy in 36 years. He won the only trophy that has eluded him in his illustrious career as he led the South Americans to their third World Cup glory after beating France 4-2 on penalties after the game had ended 3-3  in one of the most thrilling climaxes in the tournament's history.

 

Gareth Southgate will remain as England manager until after the European Championships in 2024, the Football Association has confirmed. The 52-year-old, who was appointed in 2016, led the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and a first Euros final in 2021. His current contract is due to expire in December 2024.

 

Cricket - Australia claimed victory over South Africa inside two days of the first Test as 19 wickets fell on the second day's play in Brisbane.Resuming on 145-5, Australia were bowled out for 218, before dismissing South Africa for just 99 and England finished 29 runs ahead on day 2 of their test against Pakistan after being bowled out for 354 as the hosts ended the day on 21 without loss in their second innings.

 

NFL - The Minnesota Vikings completed the biggest comeback in NFL history to beat the Indianapolis Colts and secure their place in this season's play-offs. After trailing 33-0 at half-time they won 39-36. The victory took the Vikings' record to 11 wins and three defeats for the season and it was their first against the Colts in 25 years.The Buffalo Bills are also in the play-offs after beating the Miami Dolphins 32-29.

 

Football Australia said it will "weed out" those responsible for a pitch invasion that forced the Melbourne derby in the A-League to be abandoned on Saturday. Melbourne City player Tom Glover and the referee were hit by a metal bucket, while a TV cameraman was also hurt. FA said Glover and referee Alex King are in good health but shaken.
