What specialist do I need to see ?

Featured Replies

8/12 months ago started on the OMAD diet eating lunch only with the intent to lose weight.

I have lost weight, A large chunk infact.

However that hearty lunch time meal has now withered to basically nothing.

Food tastes terrible (especially anything savoury), If I can struggle down a mouthful I have done well.

Had my yearly check up done 2 months ago (Samitivej Sriracha) , Docs says everything in working order and OK, unfortunately the Hospital for what ever reason would not give me a copy of the results so result is void.

Twice now I have been to see a general  doctor at Bangkok Pattaya for other matters, I have brought up this subject as well but both times the Doc has just it is a vitamin defiency.

I need a Doc or specialist that is willing to look past "vitamin defiency" as Iam becoming malnourished and need to sort this.

Any idea's ?

Don,t know why but Berroca gives me a huge appetite!

It is very, very unlikely to be a physcial problem. More likely psychological.

High potency B vitamins will often stimulate the appetite.

Fore how long has food not tasted good?

Incidentally, by law the hospital has to give you all your records on demand. Go back, and go to the medical records office with your hospital number and passport.

P.s. Zinc can also help. As you have had duch restticted intake you slmost certainly have a number of vitamin snd mineral deficiencies.

Take a good hogh potency vitamin & mineral supplement plus, for a week or two, additional B complex and zinc.

Perhaps the OP might consider going off the OMAD diet, and onto a reduced carb diet. I eat as much as I want, but only the right foods. Went from 93 kg to 77 kg, no loss of appetite.

As Sheryl said, one meal a day does result in various deficiencies. I take zinc, Vitamin D,

magnesium and Vitamin B complex regularly.

Iam not on any diet by choice now.

I simply cannot eat, food tastes terrible and I struggle to eat a mouthful.

Wondering if you have had COVID, might be one of the "long Covid" effects.

I can't help with a specialist. According to Google:

"Dysgeusia is a taste disorder. People with the condition feel that all foods taste sour, sweet, bitter or metallic. Dysgeusia can be caused by many different factors, including infection, some medications and vitamin deficiencies. Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause of dysgeusia"

Other causes mentioned are dental hygiene, stress and brain trauma.

Nutritional deficiency is most probable cause...as doctor suggestedm

As ssid before:

Tske a good vit &  mineral supplement every day

And for a week or two additional B complex plus zinc on top of that

How old are you and are you on any medications  ?

As said that makes no sense at all - yearly exam type testing is designed for you to have that information.  If done only at doctors orders rather than a scheduled plan the doctor should have provided copies but you might have to ask in that case.  As said you can request from staff at any time.  In fact most doctors will write up a multi page medical report if you ask.  I request results of all tests and a medical certificate every time and have never had any objection to providing such (it is often a requirement for insurance).

Am 50, was on high blood pressure meds but have stopped them under my own direction as my BP now averages 115/75.

Currently I take;

Centrum Silver - 1 daily.

Fish Oil - 1000mg 1 daily.

B12 - 1000mg 1 daily.

For nutritional intake I started drinking (about 2 weeks ago) Nestle Boost Optimum.

How long have you been taking these supplements?

Any ither symptoms besides bad taste of food?

Any signs of a respiratory infection in past 3'4 months?

If you're thinking an undiagnosed case of covid, then I was thinking the same, as bad taste and or loss of taste seemed to be a common effect from covid.

For OP, on the multi vitamin thing,  I take Kirkland, and swap off every day.  Kirkland 'mature' since having lots of vit A, but no Iron & Kirkland multi, since having plenty of  iron, but little of Vit A.  Then rest of the nutrients are almost identical.

Since both, vit a & iron, stored in fat, and I eat a fairly healthy diet, I don't want too much of either.  Besides, they are simply a supplement, for the bits I may miss or not get enough of.  Not to be anyone main nutrient intake.

Centrum have been taking for years, the other 2 maybe 3 months.

No other real symptoms... other than the lack of energy and insomnia.

When had check up Doc mentioned a small infection in the bottom of my lungs.

Has that infection cleared now? It may be one of the possible causes.

Therefore, you probably need to get that resolved before you can hope to get back on the rails in terms of eating.

Yes I did ask if I needed a follow up, Doc booked me for a visit with the specialist.

When I arrived at reception that evening of the appointment they refused treatment as I did not have a recent negative PCR on record.

Are you vaccinated?

this may not be helpful, but do you exercise?

i'm thinking exercising may help build up your appetite. i would try going for long brisk walks .. at least 1 hr per day.

what else? food tastes terrible? what about sipping on smoothies with a straw? at least you're getting some nutrition. yogurt, banana, egg yolks, protein powder.

That sounds odd to say the least. What sort of "small infection"?  Infection at base of lungs generally means pneumonia and that is not z "small" matter. What sort of specislist did he refer you to, infectious disease? Pulmonologist?

Make a new appointment first getting the necessary COVID test and go back to see him. This may well be the source of the problem.

I do not know what the specialist was, I  got the feeling the doc only referred as I asked.

I'll not be dealing with that hospital again.

Then go to that hospital (medical record dept) and get all your records including CD of the chest Xray. Post the results here (or send me by PM) and I will suggest a doctor.
