How did President Zelensky get to Washington?

Zelensky arrives at Joint Base Andrews near Washington

The extraordinary measures taken to transport Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from Ukraine to the US capital are a sign of just how crucial the two countries' relationship is for both sides.

After visiting the front line in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday, Mr Zelensky's journey to Washington DC began with an overnight train journey to Poland before boarding a US Air Force plane, reportedly supported by a Nato spy-plane and an F-15 fighter jet.

Reports of the visit to Washington began circulating early this week, but it wasn't confirmed until early on Wednesday morning, when US officials felt certain that Ukraine's leader was safely en route to the US capital.

Darn, I was thinking magic carpet, most of them are red I believe.

Lots of money for arms means lots of large political donors involved. Won't be any recession in the arms industry of the USA.

Ya, was there ever a time when the arms industry felt a recession?

I can't see the Russians trying to kill him as the alternative would be far worse.

The issues at hand here, as Zelensky said to the US Congress yesterday is for the entire world to face down and to vanquish. Why? Because, as Zelensky correctly stated in his address it is about the defence of freedom and democracy, and the defeating of the age old forces of extreme right, ultra-nationalist, religious cults, fascism, and despots ala Putin and others (no matter how flawed democracy may be).

Looks like Air Force One in the photo.

But it may have been Air Force 2, which is the VPs call sign when the VP is aboard.

However it could also have been any other aircraft of the  89th Airlift Wing aircraft, such as the Boeing C-40 Clipper, C-20B, C-37A, and C-37B, have also served in this role.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Two

Air Force Two is the air traffic control designated call sign held by any United States Air Force aircraft carrying the U.S. vice president, but not the president.[1][2] The term is often associated with the Boeing C-32, a modified 757 which is most commonly used as the vice president's transport. Other 89th Airlift Wing aircraft, such as the Boeing C-40 Clipper, C-20B, C-37A, and C-37B, have also served in this role.[3] The VC-25A, the aircraft most often used by the president as Air Force One, has also been used by the vice president as Air Force Two

Judging by a lot of comments on social media and "news" sources like Fox, he's under more threat in the US than in Ukraine.

Especially from pro-Putin Republicans like Majorie Taylor Greene with her full throated defense of Putin and the invasion of Ukraine.

Full List of Republicans Who Sat During Zelensky's Speech

Zelensky's address was enthusiastically received, with the vast majority of lawmakers joining repeated standing ovations as he vowed Ukraine would repel Putin's army.

However, a small group of right-wing House Republicans appeared less impressed, remaining seated during at least some ovations.

Washington Post reporter Leigh Ann Caldwell tweeted: "During one standing ovation, Rep. Clyde (R-Ga.) was one of the few who didn't stand. When Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) encouraged him to stand, Clyde seemed to mouth 'I'm not. I'm not,' while shaking his head."

Whatever gets the job done. Ukraine military assistance is a bargain for the western world.

Thank you for letting Putin know. Now he can't do much elsewhere, but he now knows Zelensky will probably be taking a train from Poland back to Kyiv.

You keep your mouth shut about stuff like this until the man is back home safely. But then... European leaders were tweeting out of train on the way to Kyiv in the middle of bombardment, even saying Russia would not attack train service so it's the safest way to travel... I guess people nowadays are really hungry for publicity and lack any judgement for consequences of their actions...

MAGA venom is real, the critical take on Zelensky is more than they've ever said about Putin. Even down to their criticisms of what Zelensky was wearing. Fox News and Tucker Carlson their favoured Putin apologist being featured heavily on Russian state TV.

Well, well, what do you know. This little sweetheart was flown by the US air force, the bill for which will end up on NATO's desk in Brussels. Wondering if the incidents since 2014 in the East of Ukraine will be on the agenda ..... or not. Is there an American photo-op planned; I mean Vogue in Paris printed 16 pages extra with him and his wife while his country was bombed and on fire. Your call!

No it won't. The US will foot the bill. They invited Zelensky, not NATO.

Defence of freedom and democracy? Please. Ukraine is not exactly a haven of either one.  Freedom House rates Ukraine as "partly free", below countries like Brazil and bulwarks of democracy like Tunisia.  Ironically, also below Hungary, a nation that gets a lot of stick around here.
