Distraught mother files police report after son, nearly 2, stops breathing at nursery - little chance of recovery, say doctors

Daily News reported on a parent's worst nightmare - a call from a nursery to say that her son had stopped breathing.

It was the very first day that mum Patchara had taken her son Kun, aged 1 year 11 months, to the nursery near her house in Nong Chok, Bangkok.

The nursery told her over the phone that Kun had stopped breathing and had turned "green" because he had covered his nose with a cloth.

They rushed him to a hospital that didn't have a child respirator. He was then transferred to another hospital.

But doctors said that he was in a coma. He had stopped breathing for so long that his chance of survival was virtually nil.

He is being kept alive on a respirator because the parents cannot accept what has happened.

Patchara reported the matter to the Nong Chok police. She had been told by the nursery that CCTV was broken.

She said that in December she had taken her son to the nursery for a trial. They said they had CCTV though not a constant stream.

In the meantime she and her husband took it in turns to look after their son when one had to work.

But on January 18th they both had to work so she took Kun to the nursery for the first time.

At 10.42 am she was sent a clip of her son drinking milk.

At 12.42 she inquired on Line if her son had eaten yet and had his nap.

The nursery didn't read the text or reply.

Then at 2.23 pm the nursery called to say he was face down and had stopped breathing because of the blanket that had been brought in with him.

Patchara said he had had that blanket since he was born.

Doctors told her that it was possible for a child of that age to suffocate like this.

The mother said that she was told that the CCTV was broken - she doesn't believe that her child was deliberately harmed but she felt it was a coincidence that needed explaining.

Especially after she was told that they had CCTV, something that put her mind at rest before deciding to leave her child at the nursery.

Nong Chok station chief Pol Col Prasert Sornjaem said that the nursery's server and hard drive would be examined and the nursery could be charged with negligence.

He understood the mother's anguish.

The child remains on life support at Nopparat Hospital.

Inexcusable behaviour which is alas all too common.

Oh my dear Lord!  If something like happened to one of my kids, you can bet your ass that there would be a reckoning!  There is definately something fishy going on in that "nursery".

So tragic but I'm almost becoming de-sensitised to this kind of story.

The laissez-faire culture in this part of the world can be charming and often has it's advantages, but by the same token means (along with generally terrible education standards) that these mostly avoidable tragedies happen on a far too frequent basis.

RIP young man and I hope your parents somehow find the strength to get through this.

Usually people turn blue/ purple but green is new to me…

I guess nursery school is cheaper than proper day care…but under two strikes me as too young being in a school environment where who know how many in a class situation?

As it was reported, the patents checked out the place before using it so I'd guess that they would know how many.  You seem to be suggesting that there were too many...why would you do that with no knowledge of the situation at all?

Your post is the only mention anywhere about a school. A "Nursery" is in fact a day care for infants, not an educational facility!
