Florida lawmakers vote to back expansion of DeSantis’ migrant relocation plan

Florida lawmakers on Friday approved an expansion of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ controversial program to relocate migrants, giving the Republican leader authority to transport individuals from anywhere in the country.

The measure, now headed to DeSantis’ desk after passing the GOP-led House on a 77-34 vote, would allow his administration to pick up where the governor left off last year when he sent two planes of migrants from San Antonio, Texas, to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The attention-grabbing act thrust DeSantis into the middle of the national debate on immigration, earning the potential 2024 hopeful praise from conservatives and widespread condemnation from migrant advocacy groups and the White House.

In other words, Florida taxpayers will now pay for future DeSantis campaign stunts of sending agents anywhere in the country, rounding up immigrants, and shipping them somewhere else in the country.  This does not benefit Florida or the US in the least, but it will keep DeSantis's name in the news and ensure future Faux News appearances.

Sounds reasonable to me. Send them from a place that doesn't want them to somewhere that does.

I think we can assume that Democrat states like California and New York want them, given their pro immigrant statements in the past.

What is reasonable about Florida taxpayers paying to shuffle immigrants between states hundreds of miles away from Florida.  This clearly is DeSantis using taxpayer money to fund election stunts.

For starters, their not immigrants. Migrants at best and what's wrong with a ticket to a state like NY where they'll be given a 4-5 star hotel room.

Isn't it better to ship the problem out of state to sanctuary cities like NY than to keep them instate and continue paying. Taxpayers lose either way.

Read the topic article.  They are not shipping immigrants out of Florida, they are sending agents to other states to round up immigrants and send them to another state.  Immigrants that weren't in Florida and won't be sent to Florida.

 

I assume the hurricane Ian clean-up using immigrants is largely completed, so DeSantis can once again climb on the immigrant bashing bandwagon.  Unfortunately for DeSantis, Florida doesn't have as many illegal immigrants arriving as other states, and the ones that are here are usually employed by farmers and businessmen who are DeSantis voters.

 

In order to grand-stand about being tough on illegal immigrants, DeSantis has to send agents to other states to round them up.  The legality of this will be challenged in court, so more Florida taxpayer money will be wasted defending an unnecessary policy.

Florida besides being hot has no individual income tax ! Best to send them out to dem states were they could use tax payers funds to accommodate them .

What would the cost of housing, medical care and schooling cost the taxpayer? Is that fair? Seems like a bus ticket is saving boat loads of money.
