Khon Thai Pracharath housing projects in seven provinces scrapped

The cabinet has decided to scrap the Khon Thai Pracharath housing projects for low income earners in seven out of eight provinces, after the projects either failed to attract bidders or the successful bidders have encountered financial difficulties and could not proceed with the project.

In the government-initiated project, each housing unit was priced at between 350,000 and 700,000 baht. The houses include twin and terraced houses, each covering an area of not less than 28 square metres.

Prachuap Khiri Khan is the only province in which the housing project could be implemented without problems. The same projects in Chon Buri, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen were cancelled, because the successful bidders encountered liquidity problems and abandoned them.

So let me understand this. The land is government owned, the houses were supposed to be for low income earners, and the construction companies were to fund the houses. Why is the government not funding the builds and handling the loans? Or did money already exchange hands and did it find its way elsewhere like the police station housing money....

I think you're onto something there.

How much has this cost? Where did the money go for this project?

Sadly, I am not surprised. For many rural workers on 300 baht per day (or less) such housing is not "low cost".

Please note 300 baht was the local wage where I lived in rural Khon Kaen pre-pandemic. I stand corrected if the wage has increased post-pandemic.
