Snooker fans in Thailand are in for a treat when many of the best players in the world head for Pathum Thani north of the Thai capital Bangkok for the Six Red World Championships 2023.

 

The venue is the Thammasat Convention Centre on the road that leads from Rangsit to the ring road.

Featuring 32 cueists including eight Thai players the event, not played since before the pandemic, runs from Monday to Saturday next week.

 

Defending his title won in Bangkok in 2019 is Scotland's Stephen Maguire who is in Group A with Chinese ace Ding Junhui and Thailand's female 15 red world champion Mink Nutcharut.

There are four players in a round robin in each of the eight groups. The top two go on to the last 16 (best of 11), then quarter finals (best of 11), semis (best of 13) and Saturday's final which is best of 15 games.

 

The shorter format makes for an exciting variation on the 15 red standard with a maximum break of 75. This has already been achieved in qualifying by four players in Barnsley, England.

 

Each group has a Thai player.

 

"The Rocket" with Thai speed ace Thepchaiya Un-Nooh

 

In group B is one of the fastest players in the game Thepchaiya Un-Nooh who will be playing English legend "Whirlwind" Jimmy White, a six red world champion in 2009.

 

Group C features Scotland's John Higgins and Poramin Danjirakul.

 

England's former world champion Judd Trump headlines Group D with Krisanut Lertsattayathorn.

 

Crowd favorite Dechawat Poomjaeng will be taking on recent Welsh Open winner Robert Milkins - who claimed a near 10 million baht prize - in Group E.

 

Thailand's veteran legend James "Tong" Wattana

 

Group F has Welsh wizard Mark Williams and Thailand's Sunny Akani while Group G contains former world champion Stuart Bingham from England and key Thai hopeful, the in-form Noppon Saengkham.

 

But it is Group H that will really get the pulses racing. It features arguably the best snooker player of all time in Ronnie "The Rocket" O'Sullivan and Thai legend James Wattana known in the kingdom as "Tong".

 

The total prize fund is 11 million baht with the winner taking home 4.2 million baht.

They are usually really cheap, maybe 100-200 baht per session and available on the day. Final will be more expensive and worth booking earlier in the week.

The place is quite far from where I am staying now. But, I might go for just one day of the tournament. 

 

I used to play six-red snooker in the 90's and early 00's. I never became very good at it but it was fun, having beer or whisky and playing and socialising at the same time. 

 

I think that for some reason, the no of snooker clubs in Bangkok has decreased a lot since the 90's. I was staying in Saphan Kwai back then. There were so many snooker clubs in that area back then. But, they gradually closed down one by one. I haven't been there for many years. I am guessing there might be only 1 or 2 left there now.
