Surin police are investigating a shocking incident in which an 11-year-old boy was doused with petrol and set on fire by a 13-year-old schoolboy, leaving him with serious burns. The attack occurred around 13:00 on 23 August, in a field near Ban Among, Tha Sawang subdistrict, Mueang district, Surin province. The victim, named locally as Sitthichai, known as “Pai”, was with his cousin when a teenager on a motorbike allegedly poured fuel over him and ignited it before fleeing the scene. Sitthichai sustained burns to his head, neck and chest, with his clothing also scorched. He managed to extinguish the flames by plunging into nearby water before returning home to alert relatives. He was rushed to Surin Provincial Hospital where he remains under treatment. According to deputy village headman Natthaphon Malai, 54, the boy was able to identify his attacker as “Do”, a 13-year-old neighbour from Ban Nong Prue. Police later confirmed the suspect had been taken in for questioning. Conflicting accounts have emerged about the incident. Relatives of the alleged attacker claimed the boys had been grilling fish together and that petrol accidentally splashed onto the victim. However, the injured child told adults that the teenager intentionally poured the fuel on him before striking a flame. Police at Mueang Surin station said multiple witnesses are being interviewed to clarify the circumstances. Travel Thai Airways Set to Soar: Major Expansion Plan Unveiled
File photo Thai Airways International (THAI) is expanding its network and boosting flight frequencies, aiming to fortify its regional presence and mitigate market dependencies. Chai Eamsiri, THAI's CEO, emphasised that these changes aim to bolster the airline's regional hub status, linking Asia and beyond. These growth strategies aim to boost passenger volumes during off-peak hours, optimise slot utilisation, and lessen reliance on specific markets. The Chinese market is a significant focus for THAI. Currently, the airline serves five Chinese cities, with plans to double weekly flights to Guangzhou and Beijing by the 2025–2026 winter schedule. Routes to Xiamen, Chongqing, and Changsha will resume, while new services to Wuhan and Shenzhen will commence. Mr. Chai anticipates this expansion will boost both flight offerings and Chinese market revenues, reported the Bangkok Post. Besides Chinese passengers, these routes attract European and Australian travellers who transit via Bangkok, showcasing THAI's network-driven model. Current flights to China achieve 70% occupancy in low seasons and 80% in peak seasons. THAI also eyes new routes to Gaya, India, and various domestic destinations as it acquires new aircraft. Currently, the fleet consists of 78 aircraft, including 58 wide-body jets and 20 narrow-body jets. By the end of the month, THAI will introduce its first Airbus A321neo, followed by an additional A321neo and a Boeing 787-9 by year’s end, primarily for routes to China and India. An additional 15 A321neos are expected from next year. To meet demand ahead of new deliveries, THAI plans to lease 8–10 wide-body aircraft for six years, with decisions on this expected next month. Fleet enhancements include cabin refurbishments across various aircraft models. Looking ahead, THAI has placed firm orders for 45 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with the first deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. By 2033, THAI envisions a 150-strong fleet, featuring Boeing 777-300ERs, Airbus A350-900s, Boeing 787s, and A321neos. Passenger booking patterns are shifting, with Asian travellers booking just three to four months in advance, in contrast to the previous six months, often waiting for promotions. Thai-German actress Marie Broenner, 33 and her partner, prominent businessman Asmakorn Singhsikornkul, were released on bail after an early-morning confrontation with police at a Bangkok drink-driving checkpoint turned into a heated altercation. The incident occurred at around 03:10 on 24 August, when officers from Wang Thonglang police station were operating an alcohol checkpoint on Pradit Manutham Road outside a car showroom. A green Porsche, driven by Ms Broenner with Mr Asmakorn in the passenger seat and two other women in the back, was stopped by police. Officers signalled for the vehicle to pull over for a breathalyser test, but Ms Broenner initially refused to get out of the car. Mr Asmakorn then stepped out, claimed to know senior officers and began shouting angrily at police. After several minutes, Ms Broenner eventually left the car but repeatedly declined to take the alcohol test despite police requests. Officers informed her that her actions constituted an offence of driving under the influence and placed her under arrest. During the arrest, Mr Asmakorn allegedly became aggressive, verbally abused officers and attempted to obstruct the arrest. Witnesses reported that he challenged an officer to a fight, shouting expletives and demanding a “man-to-man” confrontation. Police restrained him at the scene. The officer involved, Police Sergeant Udomsak Promchat, later filed a complaint against Mr Asmakorn, accusing him of insulting, obstructing and threatening police in the line of duty. Both Ms Broenner and Mr Asmakorn were granted temporary release on bail and are scheduled to return to Wang Thonglang police station on 25 August to formally hear the charges before being taken to court.
