THE PHEU THAI today (Apr.5) announced a major populist policy to hand out 10,000 baht in digital wallet for each of all Thai adolescents and adults only if the party becomes government after the May 14 general election.

Real estate tycoon Settha Taweesin, one of a trio of Pheu Thai partisan contestants for prime minister, confirmed to a cheering audience in a campaign venue that each of the Thai people aged 16 years and over will be given 10,000 baht in digital wallet to spend within six months if the Pheu Thai wins the chance to run the country after the nationwide election.

The 10,000-baht digital wallet will be provided by a Pheu Thai government for use by each of the Thais to buy goods and services at stores and shops in a radius of four kilometres from their census-registered house within six months, according to Settha.

Buying the Vote!

Why not 100,000? And why not a refill every month?

After all, it's other peoples' money. Give it away!

And why? Does it make any sense? Can Thailand afford it?

Or is it: We promise everything so that people vote for us so that the criminal fugitive will be in control again. And then he will have his revenge and he will make himself and his family even richer.

Does that make any sense for Thais and Thailand? No. But will the uneducated masses vote again for populist policies? Of course.

Sailing a bit close to the wind with that policy, could be mis-construed as vote buying.

That's the point of having taxes, yes.

I haven't done the maths but my gut feeling is yes, Thailand can easily afford it.

My vote is worth one million Baht!  And I have a way of voting 20 times. So what if I'm a foreigner, I'll play.

Well once they have bought the vote they are in power for many years and different forms of funding will be made through different programs, no need to re-fill the digital wallet anymore.  Corruption is number one in Thailand.

lets just say 40 million Thais are 16 or over, this would be 400,000,000,000 baht , about 12,000,000,000 US dollars, no small amount,

  • Popular Post

That's what they say before the election.  After the election they hope everyone forgets about it and if pressed on it just say 'the law doesn't actually allow us to do that'

No, tax should be used wisely, not just given away to buy votes.

Ya think?

...and the Thai media almost celebrates in it's complete numbness of what this is...or what it appears to be.

Whatever happened to challenging and questioning within the hallowed hall of journalism?

Wisely.....but in a very crooked manner.

Post election the new party members will receive an image of of an extended middle digit ten thousand times.

Okay that's one half of the equation.

How does that compare to the total amount of tax collected by the treasury each year?

The government can do whatever they like with tax income. If you ask me it's better for a government to give 10,000bt indiscriminately to everyone, than just giving a load of tax breaks to the rich while continuing to **** the poor.

That obviously doesn't matter. The only purpose is to the Thaksin back. And obviously he doesn't want to use his own money to buy the votes.

I am a slut I want to be bought....When will farangs get their 10,000...

Is there any wonder that the country is in the condition it's in when blatant corruption by would be politicians is now published openly in the news for all to see while the average Thai family struggles to make ends meet.

  • Popular Post

I just wonder whether Pheu Thai may have shot themselves in the foot with this blatantly populist policy, which, as many have stated, is nothing but blatant vote buying, a ridiculous policy as the already rich would also qualify.

Fully expecting a complaint from other parties and possible request for party disslolution.

Its much the same as promising to cut tax to provide people with more money. This way though means that using already collected money, the Thai GDP figure is boosted making the economy appear to be booming.

So just the usual smoke & mirrors....

What shops and what stores? Must be thousands of villages that only have some mom and pop shops and a few 'restuatant' type places within a 4km radius.
