The Airports of Thailand (AoT) is planning to shift to 100% solar panel usage at all airports within the next four years to address the rising electricity costs, said AoT President Kirati Kitmanawat.

He said the solar panel installation had already started at the sides of the runway and water storage areas around Suvarnabhumi Airport, but they are not yet operational.

Suvarnabhumi has enough space to install solar panels in order to generate electricity for all passenger buildings. The other five airports of AoT will also shift to 100% solar panel usage within the next 4 years, he said.

A logical move, as long as they have a back-up storage system for electricity on those rainy days.

And at night to turn those runway lights on!

It's not really necessary to have backup storage although I would expect the airport to have emergency generators anyway.

Most days are sunny and will make plenty of electricity and so they will use solar during the day.

For nighttime and for days when the sun is not so good, they will switch over to PEA.

Savings, once the initial investment is recovered, should be in the order of 33% or better.

Great idea!

Airports could power 100,000 homes if we covered them in solar panels | Euronews

^^^ Don’t think they’d be installing them on the runway… though you never know. ????
