I was having a close look at the jobs being offered on another website that focuses on the rest of the world and not just Thailand.

I noticed that the salaries being offered in Thailand are looooow compared to many other countries. Vietnam was the first country that stood out. Many of the jobs in Vietnam were offering double the wages offered in Thailand with superior benefits. There was a job in the UAE for 152,000 Thai baht that required only a bachelor's degree and a CELTA. The US has quite a few ESL/EFL jobs available, and only a bachelor's degree and CELTA are required for a US$46,000 annual package. Quite a few countries, like Thailand, seem to market their jobs as: "An experience you will not forget." Or something to that effect. This is like saying, "We're paying you shit, and it's really almost charity work, but you'll enjoy the new cultural atmosphere until you get sick of it and fly home." Some of the countries show no salary quotes (mostly Latin American countries), and some of the countries are so bad (Russia) that I wonder if they are assuming we don't know how to use currency converters, and check cost of living indexes in those countries. Moscow was recently rated the most expensive city in the world and there was a teaching job offered for US$500

per month. How could one survive?

I had a job in Helsinki 15 years ago paying 150,000 baht a month. My apartment was 60,000 a month and everything relative.

Much, much better getting 40,000 in Isarn.

The OP is also ignoring the oversupply of people here, prepared to take any job (usually teaching) in order to stay for whatever reason they have.

In any market, an oversupply of labour will push the price of that labour down. Also relevant is the fact that the roles you talk about in Vietnam, Dubai etc will be for bonafide qualified career teachers, not unqualified tourists who won't go home. Sadly, the salaries being paid to qualified teachers here is similarly dragged down (in 95% of cases) by the "Friday Free Buffet in Nana" teachers.

Salarys of course dont tell the whole story.

It would be interesting to see the 'cost of living index' that the OP suggested.

Earning a salary of 100,000B a month or equivelent in any country is all fine and well, but if your monthly rent on an apartment is 60K and a beer 1K then suddenly it doesnt seem such a good deal.

To make real comparisons, we need to have some kind of index where one can compare the price of essentials, like housing, transport, food, entertainment.

Only then can we see the full picture.

I work mine out on a percentage scale. All my costs here are comparable to the UK (I pay 25% of my salary on housing - the same as in the UK for example.

I've worked in some of those places that pay the big salaries. Yeah, the money was good, but I spent too much of my time thinking about my next vacation in Thailand! All things considered, there is no better deal around than Thailand considering the quality of life and ease of living. At the same time, Thailand is even a better deal if you don't have to live and enjoy life here totally dependent upon the relatively low (but improving) Thai teaching salaries. An outside income goes a long way in making the Thailand experience a lot more enjoyable.

What you are saying here is what I am considering. Yes, Thailand is a great place to live for quality of life if the money can be made to have it. Most of the high salaried jobs offered in the Middle East pay for housing, health insurance, visas and visas for spouses, transportation, work permits, flights in and out, annual bonuses and two months paid vacation. Some of the jobs in Thailand may consider those perks if pushed. I love Thailand, but I am seriously considering working a few years in the Middle East to make some serious money. An instructor I know at a university here said his experiences in Dubai were great, and he was able to make a good sum of money to take back to Thailand. Just trying to take a look on the outside of the glass box.
