Is it possible to get a temporary 3-month Insurance plan while working in Thailand.

Featured Replies

A friend is in this situation.  His travel insurance will soon expire.  He has accepted a position to teach in a school in a semi-rural area, where driving a motorcycle is practically mandatory.  The school will provide private medical insurance and enroll him in the Thai Social Security system, but those will not begin until after he passes a 3-month probationary period.

He will be legally working in Thailand with a work permit, and he therefore will be unable to renew/extend his travel insurance.  He will rent the motorcycle, and so auto insurance is not an option, and he does not feel comfortable riding a motorcycle without medical insurance.  But he only needs to be covered for 90 days.

Does anyone have any experience with this, or any other useful advice?   Your comments are most appreciated.

Proper medical insurance from Thai insurers is only available on an annual basis.

He may be able to obtain personal accident insurance that has some coverage for medical expenses arising from an accident, however the amount of insurance will not be very great and certainly not sufficient to address a catastrophic accident. There would be no cover for illness. Again, this would be an annual policy, but the cost would be significantly lower than medical insurance.

It would be easier and safer to pass the Thai driving test and rent/purchase a car.

I'll get on the back of my wife's motorbike but no one else's and only for getting around town and no major roads.

Research "Luma ASEAN Pass" Thailand is zone 1, business is best. I did. And more info let me know

Sorry need to get before entering Thailand. That had motorbike converge.
