Cambodia crocodile farmer killed after falling into enclosure

Featured Replies

A crocodile farmer in northern Cambodia has been torn to pieces by about 40 of the reptiles after falling into their enclosure, local police say. Luan Nam, aged 72, tried to move one of the egg-laying animals out of its cage when it grabbed his stick in its mouth, pulling him in, police said. "Other crocodiles pounced, attacking him until he was dead," police chief Mey Savry told the AFP news agency.

The incident happened near the city of Siem Reap on Friday. Mr Nam's body was covered with bite marks and one of his arms was missing, Mr Savry said. The victim was the the president of the local crocodile farmers' association.

In 2019, a two-year-old girl was killed and eaten by crocodiles at a similar farm in the area, which is close to the world-famous Angkor Wat temple.

Interesting. '100' human deaths per year thanks to accidents with deer. And hippos almost as dangerous as crocs. Wonder who goes swimming with, or walks too close to hippos? Strangely, though, no mention of sharks. Okay, maybe there are less than '100'...

Was watching a Thai man shift crocodiles in a pond at a farm in Phuket.

He was standing on a 150mm wide plank across the middle of the pool and herding them with a long pole. The crocodiles in this pool were 2m to 2.5m long so fairly sizeable and there were 50+ crocodiles still in the pool.

He was facing the deep end of the pool and suddenly from behind him,a crocodile lunged out of the pool and tried to grab him by the leg. It bit his gumboot but he managed to shake it off and retain his balance all in the fraction of a second. He got off that damn plank very quick.

The crocs in the pool were all excited and he would never have made it out alive if he had gone in.

I'm not sure if he was shaking but we both were. A very scary experience just to watch let alone be on the plank.
