Commanders Face Heat Over Army Conscript Abuse Scandal
FILE photo courtesy: Wikipedia In a critical move, Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced on Tuesday that commanders of units involved in conscript abuse will face disciplinary action. This strong stance follows reports of atrocious treatment of conscripts by trainers and senior officers. Mr Phumtham's declaration came during his visit to the conscript recruitment unit at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters in Bangkok. Abuses involve physical and emotional mistreatment, with some conscripts reportedly forced to serve as house help for senior officers. Determined to put an end to this, the Defence Minister insists that trainers must be schooled on recognising abusive practices. Should such abuses continue, not only the perpetrators but their commanding officers will be held accountable. In an effort to prevent further misconduct, Mr Phumtham plans to install CCTV cameras at training venues. This measure aims at ensuring transparency and safeguarding the well-being of the conscripts. Following discussions with parents, the minister united with them in ensuring improved conscript care. The initiative is part of broader military reforms aimed at reducing the number of conscripts while maintaining defence readiness through enhanced technology. Vocational training will be offered to attract volunteers, smoothing their transition to civilian life post-service. Employment opportunities are being sought for these soldiers, with businesses encouraged to reserve positions for them. Thailand’s conscription period is scheduled from April 1-12, involving men aged 21 who are selected through a lottery. The changes aim to modernise the military and provide economic opportunities for the young men serving their country. Based on a story by Bangkok Post -- 2025-04-09 -

British Man Critically Injured in Russian Roulette Incident After Drug & Gas Use in Pattaya
Picture courtesy of SiamChon. A British man is in critical condition after reportedly shooting himself in the head while playing Russian roulette under the influence of cannabis and nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas”. The incident took place at a condominium in Chaiyapruek 1 Soi 3, Pattaya, during night of 8 April. At 21:35, Pol. Lt. Col. Panasarn Khrongsit, deputy inspector of Pattaya City Police Station, received a report of a foreign national who had sustained a serious gunshot wound to the head. He immediately notified Pol. Col. Anek Srathongyu, Superintendent of Pattaya Police Station, and coordinated with Pol. Lt. Col. Apichat Jarurak, a senior officer with the Tourist Police Division, as well as local rescue workers from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation. Upon arrival at the 11th-floor room (number 1119) of the condominium, rescue teams found a man later identified only as “Michael,” a British national, lying unconscious in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the centre of his forehead. Emergency medical responders performed CPR at the scene before rushing him to hospital in a critical condition. The scene showed clear evidence of substance use. Blood was splattered across the floor, and several used balloons were found, believed to have contained nitrous oxide. A revolver, identified as a .38 calibre handgun, was also recovered with one spent shell casing still inside the chamber. A 29-year-old Lithuanian national, identified only as Mr. J, who shared the condo with the victim, told police that Michael had consumed cannabis and inhaled nitrous oxide before suggesting they play Russian roulette. Mr. J said he refused and went to lie down, only to hear the sound of the revolver clicking, followed shortly after by a loud gunshot. He rushed over to find his friend critically injured and immediately alerted another friend to contact the authorities while he sought help from the building’s security personnel. Pattaya police, along with forensic officers from Chonburi’s Region 2 Scientific Crime Detection Centre, are conducting a detailed investigation. Evidence has been collected from the room, and Mr. J has been taken in for questioning. Authorities are now trying to determine the origin of the firearm. Police stated that further forensic testing, including gunshot residue analysis on both the victim and his roommate, will be conducted to clarify the circumstances leading up to the incident. The case remains under investigation. -- 2025-04-09 -

Add insults to injuries -- some of the dumbest details about Trump's ruinous tariffs
A conservative think tank found the White House measured retail price elasticity when it should have used import price elasticity. That mistake meant the tariff outputs were about four times higher than they should have been. The correct version of the formula uses price changes in the cost of imports, meaning how much it costs a U.S.-based company to buy a good from a foreign seller. Instead, the White House factored in the retail price change, which is what consumers pay. Thus Cambodia’s 49% rate would drop down to 13%, and Vietnam’s would decrease from 46% to 12.2%. The vast majority of countries would end up being subject to the 10% tariff minimum that is part of the White House’s new policy. Trump’s tariff formula used the wrong value in its calculations, conservative think tank says. ‘This whole thing was rigged’
