A prison warden does not have the authority to grant house arrest to an inmate who has yet to complete their jail time, the Thai Department of Corrections clarified amidst rumors that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would be placed on house arrest when he returns to Thailand in July as pledged.

Today, June 8th, Mr. Sitthi Suteewong, Deputy Director General and spokesman of the Department of Corrections, came out to say that a warden does not have the authority to grant house arrest to detainees.

His clarification is in response to early reports by Thai media that a warden is allowed to authorize the relocation of detainees outside the prisons by the new regulation recently released on the Royal Gazette website.

We don't need too much fantasy to think about what would happen if wardens would be able to do that.

Poor old Thaksin…..more plastic surgery than a barbie doll human clone, and he’s still not wanted..:(((

The prisons would be empty within 24 hours

I think the final year of a sentence being in house arrest is a good idea - long as it is 24 house arrest and monitored

But maybe a new "prison" could be built somewhere to accommodate a special inmate.

But but isn't that possible with a parole board without completing the sentence? Maybe he will get a Kings Pardon, or early parole release,

So after the inmate has completed his jail time, then he can get house arrest from the warden?

…just trying to wrap my head around the logic here.

…still wrapping...

.......   on pain of being apostrophised.

Wardens maintain jails . Courts pronounce the punishment.

How is it a good idea?

The vast majority of people coming out of prison don't have 2 Satang to rub together. Who is supposed to pay to keep them fed and found for a year.

Maybe you are suggesting that wealthy influential people should get special treatment.
