BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - About 12 percent of Thailand's Grade 2 students failed a national reading test this year, largely because of poverty and migration, an Education Ministry official said Monday.

Of the 630,000 six- and seven-year-olds who completed Grade 2 in April, about 79,000 flunked the Thai literacy test.

Are 7 year olds literate in most countries? Knowing how Thai educators write and grade tests, how accurate is this?

Perhaps this reports a similar story from the Bangkok Post that's in another section of ThaiVisa, but I won't try to merge the topics for now.

If so many Thai citizens are illiterate in Thai after living in the culture for 7 years, how long would it take them to become reasonably proficient in English or Magyar?

The children that this stupid report refers to are firstly, not recognised as being Thai, are not supported in any way by the Thai authorities, their school are all voluntary with no support from the government.

Most of the school don't even have pencils and books.

How the hel_l could they read and write Thai.

Illiteracy is a problem in a lot of countries--including developed ones. I have a good friend who recently moved his family to BKK and found out that his Grade 5 son was illiterate. He couldn't read or write anything in Thai. He was shocked. He's well educated and spent a fair amount of money to send his kid to a good school (albiet a very rural and poor area). The kids not dumb either. He's now getting the assistance he needs from a rather expensive private school here.

My question on this study is how did they find these students? Most migratory people don't send their kids to school--or the kids stay in the village and attend school. 630,000 is a large sample. It may say more about the education system that the parents.
