Its the remains of a UFO. When the occupants arrived they took one look at those people  greeting them and were so shocked they fled so quickly leaving what is depicted in the photo...

Judging by the abundance of solar panels it looks as though it could possibly be, er, solar energy equipment.

It's used to harness the sun's energy, which then powers the entire train network.
