What is it? Where do you plant it?

Looks like Giant Taro.

I looks like an Anthurium hookeri hybrid. 

 

Belongs to the birds nest fern family. 

 

It likes shade to partial shade.  

OK no shade where I am unless I build an enclosure and cover it with black netting.

@jak2002003 good one just the flower was irritating me a bit because its so thin for an Anthurium hookerii.

 

Contains Calcium Oxalate hence poisonous... 

On a second note, I just bought two birds of paradise plants. Well two potts but looks like several different plants or several shoots off of the same plant in each pot. Any special conditions. My wife's house is on one of these raised plots with rubble and rock infill. I guess I dig as much of that out as I can and put bags of compost in.
