Chinese military’s three-day show of force increases headache for Taiwan

China’s military has been on a surge of activity around Taiwan this week, sending dozens of warplanes past the median line of the Taiwan Strait and into the key regions of the island’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ).

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) activity has a range of implications, none of them positive for Taiwan or cross-strait stability, analysts say.

According to figures from Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, 38 PLA aircraft were detected around the island in the 24 hours ending at 6 a.m. local time on Wednesday, 33 in the same period Thursday and 30 during the same period Friday.

Over those 72 hours, 73 PLA aircraft either crossed the strait’s median line – an informal demarcation point that Beijing does not recognize but until recently largely respected – or entered the southeastern or southwestern parts of the island’s ADIZ.

China’s ruling Communist Party claims the self-governing democracy of Taiwan as its territory despite never having controlled it, and has spent decades trying to isolate it diplomatically. Beijing has not ruled out using force to take control of the island.

and the sabre rattling continues...
meanwhile...
China owns Taiwans infrastructure by proxy and can shut it down in hours.

couple that with hypersonic missiles making naval warfare obsolete and there wont be any red white and blue fist rising from the ocean to save Taiwan when it happens

If China tries to take Taiwan like it did with Hong Kong then the mire will truly hit the fan

the rules changed once they got it back and nothing happened...why would it be any different with Taiwan?

Biden keeps saying the USA will defend Taiwan but will he? He might not have enough Ammonsian left with most going to Ukraine.

I agree the USA needs to ramp up production on ammo with this caveat any war to defend Taiwan will be more of an air / naval type,if the Chinese get ashore in numbers it will be more of a war against supply lines very different types of weapons hopefully it won’t happen

With the greatest respect, the return of Hong Kong to China by the UK went very smoothly

With the greatest respect, it went very smoothly because it was a shabby sellout. Hong Kong's rights under the Basic Law were guaranteed to remain until 2047 at the earliest.

Halfway there, those rights have been utterly shredded, as the British authorities knew all along would happen.

With the greatest respect.

Were you li Inc in Hong Kong during this period?

It was not a "sellout"....their lease had run out, and I don't really think that they had much say in the matter!

Although they tried to bargain for  50 year "good deal" for the local Hongkongers...it was probably never going to happen..

But Hong Kong and Macau (Macao) were always Chinese territories,  but not so Taiwan.

The operation that china is conducting is to test the fortitude of the alliance and exploiting the blatant weakness of the US president. What most likely what there strategy is to create a skirmish scenario and blame a flared up conflict on Taiwan. Xi upmost imperative is to not look like a war monger to the masses, that would counteract all the BS he’s been decimating

Your lack of faith in the US government and DoD is noted.

The US has sent Ukraine as much support as it can without reducing its ability to keep other commitments around the world.
