WASHINGTON – The United States is concerned about developments in Thailand’s legal system, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday, after two separate complaints against the leader of the party that won the most seats in a May 14 election.

 

Thailand’s parliament is preparing a second vote on Wednesday on whether Pita Limjaroenrat, leader of the progressive Move Forward party, can become prime minister.

 

An initial vote last week for Pita – who wants to remove the military from politics and dismantle business monopolies, among other changes – was thwarted by a Senate appointed by the royalist military following a 2014 coup.

Top spokesman at the US State Department, Matthew Miller, told reporters at a regular press conference that the United States was concerned about the possible outcome of several legal cases in the kingdom and that the ‘will of the people’ in the aftermath of the May 14th General Election, is not stifled as fears mount over a case taken up by the Constitutional Court last Wednesday alleging that the Move Forward Party has breached Section 49 of the 2017 Constitution in campaigning for reform of Article 112 of the Criminal Code on lèse-majesté.

A decisive 48 hours in Thai politics in which anything may happen with fears of a Constitutional Court intervention removing the Move Forward Party and the candidacy of Pita Limjaroenrat for Prime Minister or the nomination of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan for the job in parliament attracting more support than anticipated while on Thursday Pheu Thai, if there is not a decisive outcome on Wednesday, will probably nominate property tycoon turned businessman Srettha Thavisin. 

As Thailand faces the second round of decisive votes to elect the kingdom’s next Prime Minister, there is growing concern about a Constitutional Court petition which could see the Move Forward Party dissolved. This was referenced on Monday night by the US State Department in Washington DC where a spokesman said the United States was concerned about the situation in the kingdom and respect for the democratic will of the people.

 

The US State Department in Washington has gone on record expressing concern at the situation in the aftermath of the May 14th General Election in Thailand. A top spokesman for the State Department, Mr Matthew Miller referred to the pending legal cases being reviewed since last Wednesday by the Constitutional Court.

The US just loves to stick it's big nose into other countries business.  One can only guess just how much "back door" support is being funneled into the Thai government. 

Pita is a US puppet- hence their ‘concern’.

The US should mind their own business for once and keep their filthy hands out of Thai politics.

 

Unfortunately there is no constitution in Thailand, only a package of laws and rules they call a constitution but are ment to keep the the military in power after each election. It is the junta that rules and there will never be possibility to get a civil government, although they pretend they are democratic... Indeed the Us is the first to speak out and other countries will follow...Legal system is only for the military benefit

Being lectured by a country that has over thrown some 50 government's since 1945, many of the democratically elected, incitement of numerous illegal invasions, continues to provoke many more by having some 800 military bases around the world and whose own elections are open to massive Fraud with mail in ballots and no voter ID it's laughable he can even comment at all. Or is it really to do with the fact that Thailand announced last year it's dumping it's dollar dept by half by 2016 and applied to join BRICS that will see an end to the dollar as the reserve currency sending there own country into a depression not seen in 100 years and bring an end to US imperialism. The world will be a safer place when it does.

Thailand does military exercise with everyone I think....

What freedom supporters? These who are ally with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Ukraine (only state media, all parties but the ruling one banned, no religious freedom). If it fits their agenda they support the Shah, Saddam, Pinochet, Dalai Lama, Marcos.....

If Thailand had a real brutal dictatorship, but allows US based and goes strong Anti-China, the freedom lover would love Thailand.....Remember how they made a coup against the democratic government in Iran.

Why is their federal justice agency selectively prosecuting popular political candidates in an attempt to sabotage their run for president?

And having a 2 party system that prevents any new ideas.

But no the US imperialism is not ending and also not the USD.....Other currencies will loose, probable even the Euro and people will go into the safe USD....keeping it stable. At the end with ever increasing spending it will collapse but that can be a decade in future and with the strongest military they can squeeze out money and resources from other countries

The US is a complete joke and easily one of the most corrupt Countries in the world they can shove their opinions where the sun doesn't shine 

This headline has been completely skewed. The US is concerned over the manipulation of the election result, not MFP policies. It's been rewritten so it looks like the US is concerned about Pita. When they say "2 separate complaints against the leader..." they mean the complaints to the EC. So they're concerned about the attacks on him by Ruangkrai and co.
