In the aftermath of Wednesday’s double blow to the ambitions of Mr Pita Limjaroenrat to become Thailand’s 30th Prime Minister, the political future of the country appears to be in the hands of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, the leader of the Palang Pracharat Party and Bhumjaithai Party leader Mr Anutin Charnvirakul.

It appears that the men with the political aces who can open the door for the Pheu Thai Party are both deputy prime ministers in the outgoing government. They can supply the MPs needed for a majority in parliament and a clear passage through the Senate.

 

They are Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan and Anutin Charnvirakul of the Palang Pracharat and Bhumjaithai parties respectively. The two parties which only polled 4% between them in the party list national vote on May 14th now find themselves as indispensable power brokers to an eight-party coalition that achieved 75% of the votes in the same poll.

Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul has revealed that the Pheu Thai Party has yet to approach him about joining their coalition to elect Srettha Thavisin as Prime Minister on July 27th next but has made it clear that his party will not do business with the Move Forward Party because of its controversial policy on lèse-majesté. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin, in a speech last weekend, blamed the Move Forward Party for importing divisive identity politics into Thailand and called for a more balanced and centred government.

The writers of this article are wrong. The coalition just needs to stick together and propose Settha as PM. 

If rejected by the senate, propose the other two candidates from PT. 

If all are rejected, let the military backed parties form a minority government and be forced to quickly hold a general election when their bills can't pass Parliament.

I hope I'm wrong but sadly I suspect PT leaders are itching to get their hands on the wheels of power and will find little compunction in joining hands with those party (ies), they vowed to never join with..

If they do, may they be cursed for seven generations and go the way of The Democrats, irrelevant and obsolete

Is it not appaling, how medieval all this musical-chair-performance of all those dinosaurs appears? Anutin can "supply" MPs to get a political party into the driver seat. In a democracy voters are the legislative and the Anutins are the executives but here .......

Democracy in Thailand is confirming, once more again, the very own interpretation of the system without similarity to the proclaimed manifest. But it remains with the semi-divine Thai voters to live with the mess they have been voting ...... or for their unwillingness to change a completely rotten system so utterly misused all in the name of their nation, religion and monarchy. 

Don't let the military win and get back in the Government..They have showed already they are not democratic worthy.. Section 112 needs to be reformed and Pheu Thai don't need to do it, but can't block MFP from doing it. If the coalition now formed stays together it is a clear sign that both parties respect the vote of the public. If Pheu Thai decides to reject MFP and works with the armybased parties again, it will not be accepted, and be a shame for will of  public. But Pheu Thai must not forget that the Governments they had were always ended by a coup. So why should they now work together??

The coalition need to stick together if the worse comes to the worse let the caretaker government run in the short term May 2024 is only a few months away then the unelected senators are no longer and the caretaker government can be given a no vote of confidence and new elections can be held and may the best progressive party that wants change win by an overwhelming majority all the old codgers can put themselves out to grass along with there buffaloes and expensive swatches as there time is soon coming to an end .

it's okay, one will be stoned and the other asleep in his chair. 

PT is losing its political soul and is now opposing the populace, which clearly voted for change and against the old junta guard. PT shows no backbone to fight for democracy in Thailand. The pro-democracy parties only had to stand together until the end of May 2024. Simply participate in a 10-month blockade. Ultimately, it is the Senate that blocks the will of the people. Just keep bringing in new PM candidates one after another, all of which are rejected by the Senate, to keep tearing the mask off the Senate so everyone can see the folly of these superfluous  institution without any mandat from the people.

Move Forward steps back, lets Pheu Thai take the lead in forming new governement

 

BANGKOK, July 21 (TNA) The Move Forward Party has announced to hand over the leading role to Pheu Thai Party which came second in the election to form a new government.

 

MFP secretary-general Chaithawat Tulathon on Friday said the election –winning MFP has decided to step back and hand over the leading role to Pheu Thai in forming a government.

 

He apologized to the public for the unsuccessful attempt to establish a government after its leader could not secure enough support from the 749-member bicameral parliament to become the next prime minister.

A popularly elected 2/3 majority in Parliament cannot determine who becomes PM. Maybe the word "democracy" should be deleted from the Thai constitution for a better understanding.

Going the same way as Cambodia. Namely controlled corrupt officials, (Cambodia by ex: Khmer Rouge, who instead of holding high office should have faced a death penalty).

Going the same way as Myanmar, controlled by an oppressive dictatorial, military junta!

Let alone Vietnam and Laos...
