Community Drama in Ranong: Missing Boy Feared Drowned Found Hiding in Grass After Four Hours
Picture courtesy of Workpoint. What began as a dramatic search-and-rescue operation ended in relief and astonishment when a 13-year-old boy, believed to have drowned, was discovered hiding in a patch of tall grass near his home. The boy, the son of a Myanmar rubber plantation worker, was reported missing after he had gone fishing alone near the Haad Som Paen Reservoir in Ranong Province. His disappearance sparked immediate concern, prompting the Ranong Rescue Foundation to dispatch a team of volunteers and divers to search the area. Rescue teams, equipped with lighting and generators, joined local residents to search the reservoir, focusing on the last area where the boy had been seen. Witnesses reported murky water as deep as two to three metres, and divers prepared to search beneath the surface. However, just before the divers entered the water, the search took an unexpected turn. The boy was found lying quietly in a dense patch of grass near a drainage ditch in front of a workers’ house, just metres from the original search area. It is believed he had been hiding for nearly four hours, paralysed by fear of punishment from his mother. The emotional reunion saw the boy suffer convulsions, likely due to stress and fear. His mother embraced and comforted him before calling for emergency medical assistance. Rescue volunteers transported him to Ranong Hospital, where an ambulance was waiting to provide further care. Mr Chamnong, 60, the owner of the rubber plantation and employer of the boy’s family, recounted how earlier that evening the boy’s younger sister had informed the parents that her brother was hiding in the grass, but her claims were dismissed when he did not respond to their calls. “I didn’t believe he had drowned,” Mr Chamnong said. “I knew he could swim. When I came to check the water system and walked near the grass, I saw him lying silently. He must have been too scared to come out after seeing so many people searching.” Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-06-03. -

Economics Thailand and United States Strengthen Economic Ties Following Meeting
Picture courtesy of Matichon The Minister of Commerce, Mr. Phichai Naripthaphan, has announced strengthened economic cooperation between Thailand and the United States following a key meeting with Mr. Neal Wolin, Vice Chairman of the global strategic advisory firm Brunswick Group and former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Treasury under former President Barack Obama. The meeting, held on 2 June, also included Ms. Michaela Browning, CEO for the Asia-Pacific region at Brunswick Group, and representatives from the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC). Discussions focused on global economic and trade developments amid ongoing international challenges. Brunswick Group, a leading global advisory firm in strategic communications, plays a vital role in supporting both public and private sectors in policy management and international relations. According to Mr. Phichai, the talks marked an important opportunity to deepen Thailand-US collaboration across multiple sectors. “Thailand closely monitors U.S. trade policies, particularly retaliatory tariffs which may impact Thai exports,” Mr. Phichai stated, underlining the strategic importance of understanding and responding to changes in American trade measures. Executives from Brunswick Group emphasised Thailand’s strong potential as a high-quality production base for U.S. exports. They also praised Thailand’s efforts in resolving past trade disputes with the U.S., seeing it as a strong foundation for advancing bilateral negotiations and practical cooperation. Mr. Phichai highlighted Thailand’s readiness to serve as a regional hub for advanced technology industries, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres. He stressed that these sectors would be key drivers of Thailand’s future economic growth. Additionally, he underscored Thailand’s ambition to be the region’s leading medical hub, contributing to public health security during emergencies. The Minister also pointed to Thailand’s strategic role as a key U.S. partner in promoting food security and encouraging Thai private sector investment in the United States to create a sustainable economic partnership. “Thailand hopes to hold official discussions with the United States on crucial trade issues, including U.S. tariff measures, in the near future,” Mr. Phichai concluded. The meeting is seen as a significant step toward solidifying Thailand’s role as a strategic economic partner to the United States in Asia. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-03. -
