Why Trump's poll lead went up after criminal indictments

Donald Trump's mounting legal troubles have not dented his status as the clear frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. In fact, the criminal charges have strengthened his position. Why?

The former US president has been indicted twice in the past four months - once in New York for alleged financial crimes and once in a federal court on charges that he mishandled sensitive government documents and obstructed an investigation.

He may be on the verge of a third indictment, for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and a fourth in Georgia for pressuring state officials to reverse his 2020 defeat there.

Through this all, Mr Trump's campaign has not just continued unabated, it has thrived.

An average of opinion polls from 31 July shows he has a commanding lead of 37 points over his nearest rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

No-one else in the crowded field of 14 candidates scores over 6%, and more than half of them are not even at 1%.

Back in mid-February, Mr Trump's lead over Mr DeSantis in the average of polls was just two points (41% to 39%). That turned out to be the Florida governor's high point so far, however. While his star has faded and his poll numbers have plummeted, Mr Trump's support has remained rock solid.

And since the first indictment was brought in the first week of April - making Mr Trump the first former US president to face criminal charges - it has actually grown.

According to the average of polls, Mr Trump has been the first choice of a majority of Republican voters ever since that first arrest and court appearance.

They're polling the sheep. What do you expect.

Not going to be enough for the general election + all the lousy republican ideas that have been forced down our throats by the Supreme Court

Hey Donnie, if you committed a capitol crime you'd probably bring in even more capital -- hey, did you you hear what Jared has been saying about you?

Well yes of course, that’s how cults are.

Because all of his supporters watch the fox news entertainment network and as far as they know he was exonerated of all charges and will soon be returning to the white house.

Smokescreen to hide the two IRS whistleblowers, Hunters plea bargain rejection, and Deven Archer’s unsworn testimony.

"That the Biden "criminal Mafia family" are using  all means at there disposal to discredit Trump and deflect attention from there nefarious business dealings"

Let's ignore, for now, the fact that you have no evidence to support your claims about criminal activity by any Biden and focus on "using all means at there (sic) disposal to discredit Trump":

Are you claiming that Trump did not take boxes of documents from the White House, documents that he clearly had not right to keep and included highly classified material, and fought returning them?

Are you claiming that Trump did not pay off a porn star for a fling he had while his wife was recovering from giving birth to his son?

Are you claiming that Trump did not make a phone call to the Georgia's Secretary of State to make discredited claims about election fraud and ask him "to find 11,780 votes"?

Are you claiming that Trump's repeated lies about a stolen election had nothing to do with the January 6 insurrection?

Unless you can show that Trump did not do these things on his own initiative, then I see no reason why anyone would have to do anything to discredit Trump.  He's doing a fine job on his own.

Anyone with half a brain can see that.
