Social Media
The Philippines accused China’s coast guard of obstructing and employing water cannons against a Philippine military supply boat in the South China Sea on Sunday. The Philippines condemned these actions as “excessive and offensive” toward its vessels. China’s coast guard responded by asserting that it had applied requisite measures in compliance with the law to prevent Philippine vessels, which it accused of trespassing and transporting illicit construction materials. “The Philippine Coast Guard [PCG] strongly condemns the China Coast Guard’s [CCG] dangerous manoeuvres and illegal use of water cannons against the PCG vessels,” the Philippine coast guard said in a statement. “Such actions by the CCG not only disregarded the safety of the PCG crew and the supply boats but also violated international law.” The Armed Forces of the Philippines denounced this action as “wanton disregard of the safety of the people on board and in violation of international law”. The Philippine Coast Guard “calls on the China Coast Guard to restrain its forces, respect the sovereign rights of the Philippines in its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, refrain from hampering freedom of navigation, and take appropriate actions against the individuals involved in this unlawful incident”, a spokesman, Commodore Jay Tarriela said in a statement. Tropicalevo
Someone needs to give the CCP a slap on the back of the head. Unfortunately they have been allowed to make a 'soft' takeover of other countries' territories and now everyone is too distracted with events in the Ukraine to do anything about China. Good timing Xi.
Hawaiian
Former president Rodrigo Duterte thought he could deal with Chinese aggression by distancing the Philippines from the U.S. China became more aggressive.. Now Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (Bong Bong) has welcomed back the U.S. military. Smart move? Only time will tell.

Good timing Xi. Actually the problem is that neither the Philippines nor the other countries round the Sth China Sea (notably Vietnam & Indonesia) are armed either physically or psychologically to resist the continuing Chinese encroachment. The new Philippine regime at least show signs of understanding the problem. Doing anything useful - like sinking a Chinese ship or two - might take some time.
RocketDog
What the CCP cannot gain with soft power they will gain with force. This aggression will only end in war because eventually some country will be forced to fight. The CCP sees every facet of society as a battlefield and every country an adversary to be conquered. It's just the way they roll.

Japan seems to wake up from its military ???? slumbering. Korea can also fairly easy flex some muscle. The rest are weak, but have huge populations to draw on. gargamon
We need a NATO like organization in that area. Japan, Australia, Philippines, USA, etc. And dissolve the UN and immediately create UN_2 with no veto power for China or Russia.

China's weakness there - as indeed Japan's & Korea's - is that a very large proportion of its 2-way trade passes via the SCS. And it would be very easy for the US to choke off the straits round Malaysia/Singapore. Whence also China's moves to build up relations in Central Asia, displacing the ever-weaker Russia. India coming out of its shell at last, because of the Chinese threat - not just in the Himalayas but with Chinese naval bases abuilding in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and (already) in Djibouti. Who do all of those surround? Edited August 7, 2023 by mfd101

Central Asia is a rich source for raw materials. Not much of a market for exports.
