In Lamai, where I stay, there are a few really big fat holes in the road, here and there.

I wonder, if I talked to a construction company and got them to send their next over-order concrete truck to one of the holes, then I organised and paid for some workers to fill in that hole - would I get busted by the cops?

Would I be causing the loss of face of some wnaker so badly that he'd have me hit?

Anybody else interested in this odd idea, to fix stuff ourselves if/when we can if/when we get sick of stupid things like big holes in the road?

Why could we not organise some of the more advanced, modern-thinking building companies to donate workers and a bit of dirt to do this small job.

I worked in construction, most of these holes would cost less than 5,000 to 7,500 Baht each to really fix PROPERLY with the right mix of sand and cement and the proper location and placement of reinforcing steel.

Is this just another one my frequent stupid ideas? Or could some of the Farangs on this island actually get some things fixed themselves without bothering the hard working, overworked, eager local authorities? I mean, we only really pay tax to they can try out different noodle soups for lunch, yes?

Whatcha reckon? Looney idea? Jail sentence material? Certain hit contract? Or a real way to fix some small problems?

Just lookin' for some feedback.

I really did not think of that and for sure, that is a BIG one.

I mean, I know the govt. is never held responsible for such matters, but I am not the/a government, I am just a white honky trash farang, arn't I.

Sure, somebody going to loose face if I/we organised this.

So sure, next accident even near the fixed hole, it is quite possible that some petty minded little craphead would say "oh yeah, that accident is because of the badly fixed hole that crazy farang did".

OK, OK, I won't give up, back to the drawing board.

I think I'll not give in to this pathetic apathy, I plan to start poking the wounds a bit here and there as I tire greatly of the rubbish and bullsiht that goes on and now would like to slowly search for solutions to several nagging issues on this island.

Thanks very much for feedback, I need it to stay out of trubble, eh?

I like the idea. Why sit around suffering waiting for the authorities to fix something which is so affordable when spread across a few people. I'll chip in when I get down there. Only, gotten remain anonymous for when the hitman comes calling and all that.

if you fix the road your self. if no one bothers u while the work is going on. later on if anyone asks who built the road or fixed the rod. just say u don't know. . someone i know conrected about 1 km of govment road he hd no choce. i had to build a bridge on govemn road becuase the road callapsed in the rain season.

if you really want to do it by the book then you call ask permssion at the govemtn office. if they said no jus do it anyway. then play stupid and tell them you don;t know who done it. get some thais to do it so none get suspicious then if anyone asks you what happened to the rad just say u don;t know.

thats my take

You are actually allowed to concrete government dirt roads but you have to obtain permission not sure when it comes to repairing existing concrete roads I think you may have to be careful.

Why fix the road do as the Thais do put a broken chair or something similar in it to indicate a hole and then drive around it. There are so many do gooders but what do you do. Go join the Rotary if you want to participate and find out what is going on.

The idea is good but I'm afraid that you will have to consider affect on local business.

E.g. Less accidents/Less vehicle, pedestrian damage = Commercial affect on Hospitals/Clinics/ Bike repair shops/Car suspension shops, etc.The list is endless.

By such actions you will be opening the door to road improvement thus depriving a whole industry of gainful employment.

A real way to fix problems but a probable contract hit.

Thanks for all the feedback. Some good warning in there, for sure. One cannot think of everything alone.

I think I may contact some large property development companies I know here. I am aware that now and then they have to dump cement that may be an hour too old for safe and strong construction but I know that within a couple hours it is still OK for road repairs, different stress loads than a construction slab.

Some good points in other posts about contacting the govt. for permission.

I think the work permit issue would be OK as I had no plan to actually work myself, good god no. Me? Dig holes and shovel concrete? Not blodoy likely.

I think the permit stuff would be OK if I had a truck load of Thai workers and another truck full of cement and sand and steel.

Anyway, I shall discuss with some folks who have the materials and workers and could surely spare a dime to do a patch here 'n there.

At least some folks might donate some chairs to stick on the holes, as one astute poster noted that this is the local way to fix holes.

cheers all

let us know how u get on. i might follow suite. as you said cement trucks always dump there cement anywhere to clean out thier truck.

maybe in some " lucky way they might acccidently drop loads of cement" that by co-incidence fixed the roads.

if u get a comany to do it. they should take responabilty if the govemtn step in.

try companies with close links to the govment. like poo yai now. opposite faulty towers. ask them.

I can't help thinking that the best suggestion with the best supporting "facts" has to be

>A real way to fix problems but a probable contract hit.

Or perhaps several contract hits?

You are right about taking work away from slack concreters, hospitals, etc.

In fact, I got into a big argument a few years back with a Maenam official.

I was telling him how easy it would be to reduce the road toll here, like really enforce speed limits, put up meaningful signs, really make people wear helmets, stuff like that.

He came quite close to threatening my life, acted very, very aggressively. He said "you just farang, no understand, leave alone, not you business, it our style, ok mai?".

That really was from the horses mouth, OK?

Nevertheless, I shall in due course suggest this to some larger developers who may have enough money for the Kevlar vests they may need during the works.
