The Queensland Climate Change Centre of Excellence research project has been co-ordinated alongside experts from the Bureau of Meteorology, Monash University and the US National Centre for Atmospheric Research.

The 'magic' substance, which produces extra rain has been successfully used in the US, South Africa, Tasmania and Thailand.

Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who has patented a popular cloud seeding technique, is expected to sign off on the project.

Water Minister Craig Wallace yesterday confirmed his department had officially written to the King and had been in contact with the Thai ambassador.

"They have taken an active interest in our trials and are very keen to see what we find," said Mr Wallace.
