6000wt shower upgrade.

Hi

Need some advice. I need to upgrade my two showers from 4500wt

To 6000 wt units.

I was going to upgrade the wiring to 4mm square. 3 singles in yellow pipe.

From the old 2.5. square in yellow pipe.

Plus a new RCBO breaker 32 amp Schneider type.

Now the new shower unit is going to be a sharp SHARP WH-X HOT6

( not bought yet)

But looking at the installation manual. It states use 6mm square wire double insulated.

My run max length will be 10meters max, do I really need 6mm square double insulated wire.?

I’m not an electrician so unsure.

Don’t want to try and get 6mm wire down a tube in a wall if I can help it.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

No, if in conduit the conduit is the "double".

Just use regular 6mm2 THW and you're good to go.

Do ensure that you have a good earth connection to the heater!!

Ok, Thank you,

I will use yellow pipe and 6mm wire.

Yeah, if it was >20m I'd be thinking a bit. But for an intermittent load like a shower ... Unless, you have teens!!!

Ok, thank you.

4mm, it is.

No teens anymore.

I had 3.5 kw Panasonics fitted 12 years ago. I don't think they have ever been in the red part of the dial. The sparky who fitted them put them on the same circuit as the rest of the bedroom, earthed of course. Not had any circuit breakers break yet or any cables go up in smoke.

Yeah, at 17A they would be OK (but not recommended) particularly as most bedroom kit is low power. https://hitachi-magic-wand-massagers.co.uk/pages/magic-wand-massager

Now someone will be along who runs a welder in the bedroom. There's no accounting for those kinks!!

EDIT For normal people 4mm2 THW would be OK for a short run. If you have teenagers go with the 6mm2????

I made a slight mistake today.

I bought  BCC  60227 IEC 01 (THW ) 1 x 6 sq mm, 7 strand wire.

didn't notice it was not a solid 1 core cable ?

Will  it still be ok to use for 6000wt shower. ?

or should i go back and try change it. ?

Hi Crossy, just wondering while on the subject, an old friend of mine a qualified industrial electrician, once told me that if the shower units aren't earthed, you will not get hot water, is this so?

Some units will refuse to heat if no earth, but I've not seen one here.

It's possible that your national regs. require this function.
