Hi,

I have been in thailand in and out for 85 days total and only have 5 days remaining if I am to come back on my Tourist visa. I understand you are only allowed 90 days total in 180 day period.

However, I have been told I can apply for a new visa (outside of Thailand) which is payable and not free like the 30 day tourist visa.

I have just left Thailand for Hong Kong and am looking at coming back for around 10-14 days before I fly home in mid August.

If anyone can give me some information, it would be of great help?

By the way I am 26 and British.

Thanks

Will start with the fact 30 day entry without visa is not a tourist visa - it is visa exempt entry. You are allowed only 90 days in a six month period (not 180 days). You can easily obtain a tourist visa at most Thai Consulates that will provide you a 60 day permitted to stay stamp on arrival - cost will probably be a little over 1,000 baht in that countries currency. A photo or two will also be required. You should be able to obtain in Hong Kong - it may require proof of your flights so take tickets with you.

Thanks, I was just about to edit the post to 30 days stamp on arrival! Looks like ill go to the Consulate in Hong Kong.

So am I right in saying you can stay for 90 days then have to leave for 90 days on a tourist visa!?!

No, you can obtain another one and stay for another 90 days. The rule is that you can stay on exempt stamps for a total period not exceeding 90 days in a six month period starting from the first date of entry. There is no limit on the number of tourist visas you can obtain. Also if you stayed for 90 days on a tourist visa, you could also get a new exempt stamp for 30 days, providing your 6 month period has ended.

There are no restrictions on visa entry - be it tourist/transit/non immigrant. Only those 30 day visa exempt entry stamps limited to 90 days in six months (I mention six months because it is longer than 90+90 and people have returned only to be told stay away a couple of days until the new six month period starts).

I may be reading this wrongly (no change there, then!!!! :o ) but, what you appear to be saying, is one can get back to back...........to back to back.......to back to back Tourist Visas Ad infinitum

That CAN'T be..............surely?

No-one appears to know the answer to this. Anyone like to comment? Who's the current record holder for back-to-backs?

Yes, it can be, as long as Thai consulates are willing to give you a new tourist visa every 90 days. Some consulates in the region have become very restrictive, others continue to issue repeat visas without any problem.

It is too early to ask for a record holder. Only nine months have passed since back-to-back visa-exempt entries are no longer possible.

Don't want to sound pedantic Maestro, you're probably right. But has one issue neccessarily had any discernable impact on the other? I.E. Since the new visa-exempt rule was introduced, has there been a noticable tightening up on the issue of back to back TVs?

The thing that i cant work out is this:

They tightened up on the "non quality tourists" by making the rules so that the divemasters, rogue teachers/bar owners etc couldnt just do monthly visa runs and work "off da books" so easily

Now it seems that, instead of making life more difficult, the authorities have, in fact made it 3 times as easy to do so, by decreasing the visa runs needed from 12 a year to just 4

TIT !!!!!!!

I dont think it was introduced to make life harder for the divemasters, teachers and bar owners etc with no work permit, more likely that they want long termers to actually pay for a visa rather than a free visa exempt stamp.
