EDUCATION STUDENT PROTEST

School director's removal sought

PRASIT TANGPRASERT

Some 500 students of Suranaree Withaya 2 secondary school walked out of their classes yesterday and marched some 10km to the Nakhon Ratchasima provincial hall to demand that the school director be removed within seven days. The protest began after some 1,000 students gathered in the school compound and accused Sanit Nakpong of not supporting student activities, and allowing teachers to sing in a karaoke booth, which he had built, during school hours. When Mr Sanit showed up to offer an explanation, he was jeered and booed.

I suspect there are many other schools with similar situations regarding the behaviour of the school directors and their teachers who think the schools are to facilitate their own inflated egos and phoney status.

I bet this particular school and it,s authorities had a reality check big time from the students that they are supposed to be there for and whose educational requirements where obviously not considered a priority.

My guess is there is more to this story than is being said. Thai students are known for being spontaneous. The whole thing may have been organized by teachers who weren't getting their share of the time in the karaoke booth!
