I will be arriving to Udon Thani at apx 6pm on an Air Asia flight and would like to know if it possible to cross the border and get into Laos (Vientiane) at this time and if so how????

I am aware of the airport shuttle buses but do they operate at, or around, this time?

The Friendship Bridge closes at 10pm so you have plenty of time. For around 600-800 baht (depending on how you haggle) you can get a taxi take you straight from the airport to the bridge.

I would be very surprised if the mini busses to the friendship bridge would not operate at that time, 150 baht, 1 hour.

Does anyone have any specific information on the mini buses mentioned in this thread? I will need transport from the airport in Udon Thani to Vientiane.

Any suggestions on the best way to go. I will be arriving at the airport in Udon Thani at 5:15pm.

How to go to center of vientian city from birder?

If the road to city is rural erea,I am afraid if the tuktuk driver is dangerous man,

so I should use bus from border,

but how often does the bus go to city from border?

and how many hours by bus, or tuktuk?

by tuktuk or by taxi (approx. 250-300 Baht).

They will drop you off at the central bus station (mostly) and from there you have to take another tuktuk. You can negotiate should your destination be between border and bus station.

You can also share a tuktuk with other people, then it gets cheaper.

If the road to city is rural erea,

It's pretty lively. Don't worry. No forests, only houses and rice fields, and LOTS of beer Lao crates in front of every hut.

and how many hours by bus, or tuktuk?

It should be 30-40 min by tuktuk.

Don't worry so much. The trip is quite safe and the only thing you have to worry about is road safety.

Please also note that the tuktuk drivers are subject to extortion money at the bridge. They have to give 50 Baht of every trip to somebody 'who is keeping law and order'. So there is really not much room for negotiations.

thank you sutrryod,

by the way, at the border, do they give back us the half of arrival immigration card same as thailand, malaysia?

or immigraion officer give us only stamp on passport?

Before you enter Laos you need to fill out a Lao arrival card, which is attached to the departure card - these will typically be available at the border crossing, or if you enter by plane, given to you either at check-in or on the plane by the airline staff.

When you go to the immigration counter, the Lao immigration officer rips out the arrival card and leaves the departure card with your passport. Make sure you keep this departure card until you leave the country, because you need to present it to the immigration officer on departure.

In essence, it is the same procedure as in Thailand although I think the Lao immigration officer at Luang Prabang did not staple the departure card to the passport, so it was loose in my passport (I had to be careful so it did not fall out).

Must have run out of staples.

The Udon to the border trip is easy and painless. Get the mini bus from the airport, at the border fill the forms in, remember you need a passport photo and $30, unless your visa is pre organised, pass through immigration and the jolly gents waiting on the other side will organise transport into the city to the quality of what ever your wallet will stand.

Say hello to Put at the Samlo Pub for me. (He's the owner). Watch the girls there, some of them aren't.

Do they put the stamp of arrival date on the depareture card same as thailand?
