THE Ministry of Tourism and Sports said today (Oct. 10) the number of foreign tourists arriving in Thailand dropped week over week (Oct. 2-8, 2023 over Sep. 25-Oct. 1, 2023) especially those from China with their total plunging by 29.47%, TV Channel 7 said.

 

Last week there were altogether 497,966 foreign tourists, a decrease of 54,453 foreign holidaymakers from the previous week. However a big drop in Chinese tourists was seen with the total dwindling from 106,472 the previous week to only 75,093 last week.

 

That the number of Chinese tourist arrivals decreased is seen to have stemmed from the teenage shooter killing two persons, both women one from Myanmar and the other from China, and injuring five others.

...so what about tourist arrivals from myanmar?

Ten years ago when flying out of the old airport it looked almost empty. 9 years later I flew out to the same destination in Malaysia and it was packed with Chinese tourists. The previous government went out its way to court the Chinese while making it more difficult for western tourists. A 6 month tourist visa from the UK was so easy to get. A simple application and 75 pounds later the visa was in your passport from a consulate in Liverpool. Then they moved all applications to the embassy in London and the process now requires proof of funds and insurance. You reap what you sow. 

I bet that all the prawns are happy!

Wait..  wah... But the Vegetarian Festival is starting soon and we all know the Chinese love this event.... wonder what could've put them off?

October/November have always been low season.

This means less tourists. ????

Could it also not have stemmed from the fact that the Chinese national holiday week (2nd biggest holiday in China) ended last Friday)?

Well it's pouring rain and flooding all over the place, so that could be a major factor.

Thailand should be happy. In several parts of the world Chinese tourists are not so welcome, as they make a lot of noise in the hotels, at buffets the take what they can't eat all and have lots of commands and demands. Why is Thailand so keen on these people? 

And the idiotic government want to tax the ones that do come. Maybe they fear a new tax and wont come.

Anything goes in this country for an explanation, why it does not work as anticipated ...... or it was a misunderstanding. 

I blame it on the high price of beer on Soi Cowboy.

People plan vacations well ahead of their departure, very few travel on a whim with short notice.

 

I doubt this decrease is due to last-minute cancellations, owing to security concerns.

That is the kind of Chinese Thailand attracts, the cheap end of the market. Go somewhere like Dubai and you see a completely different kind of Chinese tourist.

What are the current cowboy happy hour and regular beer prices? 

The Chinese are not coming in mass anytime soon. Good, bad or indifferent. Those are the facts. And the only ones that seem surprised is TAT. The world is a far different place than it was in 2019 (far more fear, uncertainty, doubt -  beit economic, war, guns/drugs/crime - there's plenty to point to). Yet TAT still wants to believe 50 million tourist will be arriving by 2025. TAT has lost the plot entirely. 

Wow Is that any surprise announce visa free travel for Chinese citizens just as they are about to start their Mid Autum hoilidays and numbers go up. Then a week later they fall, more likely they had to travel back to work, than were scared off by the Siam Paragon incident.

Chinese tourist numbers dropped as last week was golden week in China and it was a full week public holiday that’s start every years 1st Oct for 7 days.. This week everyone is back to work so it’s normal to see this decline in numbers. 

Bali hai pier is swarming with them, large groups all chatting loudly at the same time, nobody's listening 

30% good news.

Well the queues at the buffet breakfast will be less plus all the pushing and shouting 

Chinese people can't talk quietly  so at least some positives

with less around ????
