Heavy drinking is common in Surin, so much so it is often commented on in other provinces. A local limerick translates to "if you go to Surin, drink or become a dog".

I know Thailand has a fairly large problem with excessive alcohol consumption but if this is true then why that area more than others ?

It's the heavy-drinking farang influence there. :o

There's very few "heavy-drinking farang" here. That's just a rumour put about by the temperance society.
