JobThai, a leading online recruitment firm, has reported a 10.8% year-on-year increase in labour demand for the first three quarters of this year. The travel sector experienced the most significant rise in job recruitment, showing the strongest rebound post-pandemic.

The company declared 1.74 million positions from January to September, marking a 10.8% increment compared to the same period last year, according to the chief operating officer and co-founder of JobThai, Sangduan Tangthamsatid.

The travel industry led the way in employment, recording a 76% growth, with the hotel sector following closely with a 39% increase. Both sectors are recovering from the pandemic’s impact, which led to mass layoffs. The energy sector also reported significant growth, matching the hotel sector’s 39% increase.

ThaiGov proudly declare 98.9% employment yet 1.74 million job opportunities?  Could this be due to the local genetic indisposition to work.

The hospitality business has seen shortages for two decades already. Unable to obtain legal permits for ASEAN citizen most employers have resorted to illegal hiring in this field.
Along the borders of Thailand you find hundred thousands if not millions of illegal alien, some working for peanuts in an environment of no insurance or labour laws at daily wages, for which the semi-divine Khon Thai would not even work a few hours.

It is - again - a governmental problem while other ASEAN states understood and promoted the hiring of qualified labour at market salaries, see i.e. construction industry in Singapore by Thai labour. Your call!

My local Tesco appear to employ double the required staff to tap on phone screens, but only one cashier and happens every Friday morning so I must agree demand is high 🤔

Nope. It's the fact that probably up to half the 'work force' work day to day, cash in hand, beside the road, market, field, beach etc and are not registered for tax and not counted!!!!😏😏😏😏

Your'e onto something there..... although I do question the unemployment figures in Thailand.

Thailand Unemployment Rate dropped to 0.98% in Aug 2023, from the previously reported figure of 1.15% in Jul 2023. Thailand Unemployment Rate is updated monthly, available from Jan 2001 to Aug 2023, with an average rate of 1.19%

This isn't counting All the people who are not registered on Social security.

The figure is more likely much much higher.

Why is Thailand's unemployment rate so low?

Because there isn't much by way of unemployment insurance in Thailand, there isn't any impetus to stay jobless for long. Those who lose their jobs invariably enter the so-called informal sector or seek out a part-time job, and are counted as employed.
