Hi All,

My Thai wife and I (American, age 33) were married in February 2007. I have decided to move to Bangkok and wait for her USA visa. She has held her job for over 6 six years in Bangkok with a salary over 40,000 baht. I do not have a job or a job offer yet in Bangkok.

My question is regarding the Type "O" Non-Immigrant visa.

Should I apply for the single-entry and apply for extension of stay at immigration or should I apply for the multi-entry and apply for extension of stay at immigration?

My concern is if I get denied the extension of stay (how likely is this to happen?) would the multi-entry be a better option than the single-entry. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you, Scott

I would get a multi entry non immigrant O visa if you can as that allows 90 day stays and you can just exit/return for another 90 day stay. Several of those may cover your visa wait and you would not need to report address or otherwise contact Immigration.

The extension of one year requires tax proof of the 40k monthly income and a bit of running around so if you do not plan to live here do not believe it would be worthwhile.

Thanks for the quick response Lopburi3.

I was thinking about the mulitple entry just as a safety net. Tax proof is no problem. My wife has a business and owns property in Bangkok also. I may find work as time goes by and we may decide to stay in Bangkok for awhile.

Thanks again, Scott

the multiple entery will cover you if you have a family emergency and they are easy to get. A bit stressful to leave the country every 90 days especially when your trying to save money and out of work but its like insurance. but plan for a long wait. my wifes visa was filed almost a full year ago and is still not done. I worry everyday about what i am going to do when i am out of work for more than a year or dont have the money they require.

Yes the multi entry provides safety and you can apply for an extension of stay on any entry so you could delay your decision. It seems to be rare that a small business will have tax records here that show the real earnings so for many the extension of stay is not an option even if the wife is making good income.
